So that was... something.
Is it just me or was it paced really weirdly? I mean. It felt like there was no narrative tension. Which was probably partly the weird pacing and partly the fact that the two big ~suspenseful mysteries weren't all that suspenseful. WILL RORY LIVE THROUGH THIS? Er, yes, of course he will. IS THE TARDIS GONE FOR GOOD? ...no, of course she isn't.
I did love that Amy decided to put off her heroic rescue for a few minutes so that she could indulge in a little cosplay, and also Karen Gillan should dress up like a pirate ALWAYS.
The running joke of All The Doctor's Theories Are Wrong worked for me and made me laugh, and that's all I ask.
And the fact that the pirates got to be SPACE PIRATES at the end. That worked for me too. SPACE PIRATES always work for me.
I love it when there's allusions to the TARDIS interior being more than just the console room. Now I just REALLY WANT the show to spend some time in some of those other rooms. It can't be THAT much more expensive to design a couple TARDIS-room sets than it is to design, say, a pirate ship and a spaceship control room and a sickbay.
"Toby!"
"Rory!"
"My TARDIS!"
Doctor/TARDIS continues to be the show's OTP, let's be honest here. THEIR LOVE IS SO TIMELESS.
WTF is up with the lady in the eyepatch? No theories from me yet. Also, Amy's Schrodinger's pregnancy has not yet resolved itself. Not that I had expected it to, but I also didn't expect them to explicitly allude to that this episode.
Something I totally failed to understand: the captain recognizes Toby as his son, and Toby recognizes the captain as his father, and yet according to conversation they've... never met? Toby talks about how his mom said his dad was a naval captain and he'd be so proud to know him etc., etc., and it just came off as a kid who'd heard lots of stories about his father but never met him even briefly. And yet they recognized each other. IDK, I am probably missing something MASSIVELY OBVIOUS.
All in all, the episode has some really nice moments but doesn't exactly hang together for me. Which is sad. Because PIRATES.
