Okay, so I love RENT forever and I feel that, as it's suffered from overexposure, hype, and not aging crazy-gracefully, it's actually gotten underrated, but that said, LOLLL "Your Eyes." I think it's a really pretty song, but OH, ROGER. He rhymed "eyes" with "surprise." Oh, dear.

Overrated by parts of society and underrated by others, perhaps? IDK, I've just found large(ish) parts of theater fandom to proclaim RENT the one true musical, flawless, perfect, etc., and while it's definitely a noteworthy show and made a big impact on theater (and I love it, I feel I have to point that out!), it's definitely not flawless and could have benefited a lot from Jonathan living to work out the kinks.

But this song makes me LOL like crazy OMG. Roger, honey, I really hope you realize how bad your lyrics are. ♥

That's true. Like, if you're a theater kid that grew up in the '90s, you were driving your friends (non-theater kids and the rare theater kid who didn't like RENT/was sick of the hype) about how, just like you said, it was AMAZINGGGG AND BEAUTIFUL AND 525,600 MINUTES OMGGGGGGGG. But when I was reading the reviews of the (terrible) movie, I felt like every reviewer was just licking their chops in glee, going, "FINALLY, I AM NOW GIVEN AN EXCUSE TO HATE ON RENT, THAT FUCKING BASTARD. GET A JOB, KIDS!" And I frowny-faced. :(

But yeah, it's totally not flawless. I actually like its messiness, but I do sort of long for What Might Have Been had Larson lived to tighten it up and replace "You'll See Boys"I really, really hope "Your Eyes" is SUPPOSED to be bad. I assume that it is? Otherwise... D: But since "Over The Moon" is also bad, I, I think it's about how they make bad art but that's okay? Or I read someone that said that, somewhere, once. Which is why "Over the Moon" in the movie, that's why it's so weird when the audience is acting ( ... )

For me, it's "I Should Tell You". I firmly and loudly believe that song would not have made it past the first week of performances without being cut if Larson had been around to rework it.

I get all frowny-face at certain negative reviews, too! Although it's largely because I feel like a lot of people hate RENT for the wrong reasons. [/judgmental] I've ranted that rant before so I'll skip it for now.

I assume it's intentionally bad, much like Over The Moon and also Mark's movie at the end. Which is one of the reasons the movie doesn't entirely work for me? Because the movie wants them to all be ~amazing artists and for people to be ~moved by their work, when half the charm of the show is that these are people who are fairly terrible at their chosen crafts BUT DAMMIT THEY LOVE IT.

NOOOO, I want to hear it! Also, did you ever post a review of the movie here?

I wonder if you're the person I got this from! You know what's sad, even though Maureen's performance art is obviously a(n affectionate?) parody of performance art and "Your Eyes" is terrible and Mark's film is just random images, for some reason it never gelled together for me that, like you said, they're terrible at their crafts BUT THEY LOVE IT, GODDAMMIT. Not until it was pointed out to me. *facepalm*
