A long Letter to Ms. Mallory

Mallory is the lady most famous in the HP world for having accused HP of corrupting children, and though she has lost 2 court battles in trying to ban the books from her county, she still pursues her goal.

*sigh*

Hello,

I'm not from the US. I'm actually from Canada. I would just like to share my thoughts with you, as a fellow Christian.

I truly believe in the power and protection of God. I believe in His word, and I believe in His guidance. I thank God for such loving, open-minded parents, that they pray for me, and I thank God for my freedom, for my heart, and my passion for books.

I feel that through my journey in life, I have grown with God's wisdom and I love God no less than many Christians out there. God has given me wisdom beyond my years (I am 20), and with this wisdom, I have tried my best to help those around me see the goodness of life. It hurts me when children are so underestimated.

I speak to you not out of condemnation or mockery, but out of love and passion. I started reading Harry Potter when I was around 11 years old, more or less. To this day, as an adult, I still love that series just as much as I did when I was younger. It has not influenced me towards the occult, it has not corrupted me, and I say this knowing who I am in God's eyes. Children are so utterly underestimated, and this is a good example.

I feel that the true crime in life is the lack of love and support from family and friends. It is these children, who lack a portion of happiness in their realities that fall victim to the imaginative worlds of books, movies, and other media. It is NOT the media itself. Have you even read any of the books, dear? The books USE the theme of magic and fantasy as a means to express a message of the most fundamental beliefs, such as morality, loyalty, courage, friendship, and kindness.

I’m sure you know of C.S. Lewis, who is a Christian author, and is the one who wrote the Chronicles of Narnia series. I’m sure you know that that series has a high degree of religious allusions, about Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection, etc. However, Lewis chose to use fantasy to express these religious ideas because he knew that children are drawn to such imaginative worlds and the message can be more easily passed on. Children are interested in magic only in that it enables them to use their imagination to the fullest extent, to dream dreams beyond reality. However, when given the proper guidance, these children are able to distinguish the difference between these fantasies and reality. If the parents pray for their children and hold fast to faith, then that is even better.

Children who lack love and support fill their lives with other means to complete that void, whether it be violence, drugs, addiction, etc. Media is not the cause of these problems; it is the lack of true, genuine love from the people around them. Corruption stems from a lack of goodness from people, not books or movies.

As a Christian and as a human, I feel it is essential to remain as informed as possible. Ignorance only breeds misunderstanding, which in turn breeds hate. IF you haven’t read Harry Potter and declare them as evil, that would be like someone never reading the Bible and telling me it was full of wisdom. I would be less inclined to believe them.

Also, I find it imperative to know some, if not all of what I choose to talk about. Have you looked into actual witchcraft? Not in the practises, but in the fundamental philosophies and beliefs. I have, because I don’t want to talk about something I know nothing about. I looked up Wicca on Wikipedia.org, and I found that the only way the magic in Harry Potter is similar to real magic is in the word, “witchcraft”. Not even the meaning of the word, but just the use of the word. This means Harry Potter has absolutely nothing to do with real witchcraft.

Also, the name Hermes is actually from ancient Greek mythology. I don’t know about the other names, but given the nature of “Hermes”, I already doubt the credibility of your source.

What I found interesting is your quotes page. At the end you state, “GET THEM AS A CHILD YOU HAVE THEM FOR LIFE”.

But is God that powerless? I believe that if a child ever DOES stray from God for whatever reason, that child can be brought back through love, patience, perseverance and kindness. Instead of using your time to heal the hearts of children, you choose to attack something which has no relation to the problems in this world. If you see a weed, do not rip it from the ground, but deal with its roots.

Harry Potter is a wonderful part of my life, and many other people’s lives. For some, it has kindled a love of the imagination, for others, it has shown them that reading CAN be enjoyable. For many, it shows that the character of the heart, and the power of love, is what truly matters in this world.

I am a healthy Christian; I strive to love God more, to know Him more, and to draw ever nearer to Him. I know who I am in God’s eyes. I also know that Harry Potter is a book and a series that continues to fuel my passion for reading, imagination, and limitless creativity.

Sincerely,

Sister in Christ,

Rachelle
