So, I'm doing this thing called the 'Master Cleanse', popularly known as the 'Lemonade Diet'. While it's not a lose weight diet, that is a minor benefit of it, which is why so many people use it. It's primary purpose is to enhance the overall health of the user, which is something I feel I sorely need. A lot of people continue this for up to 40 ( Read more... )

I often use the lemon-maple-cayenne combination as a natural laxative when needed. It works very well, but I only use it as a laxative. That said, if you feel the need to fast just to lighten up a bit, to clean out what's been hanging around in your body, 10 days is a lot to do at once, especially for a first fast, and more especially when you're pumping yourself full of things that have a laxative effect.

I've done 1-day fasts before, and found them to be nicely effective. One day with lots of water and minimal activity. Come to that, if you're not drinking lots of water on a daily basis already, I recommend working up to it. Also, if you did decide to do a real fast, a no-food fast without any particular aids to digestion, I've read that you should start with one day, or 36 hours, and work up to doing a 3- or 5-day fast a few times a year if you feel the need. Fasting is no light thing, and it takes very careful work to go back to food afterwards. (I've made the mistake of eating a "real" amount of food the day after a 1-day fast, and trust me--urgh.)

Most importantly: human beings can't go 40 days without food. Whoever has claimed to do this fast for 40 days is lying. I've read that some people manage 40-day spiritual fasts, but that's a whole other ball of wax.
