Manga: Eroica Yori Ai wo Komete
Mangaka: Aoike Yasuko
Manga nostalgia is like eating the last cookie that everyone has forgotten, and finding it that it still tasted wonderful after warming it in the oven toaster.
This was a manga I first read when I was a wee lass and Chinese translated versions of the manga that time cost about 80 cents an issue! I can even recall the Chinese title of Eroica was 'The Pursuit of Beauty'. ... I am so dating myself here but it was a most enjoyable manga then. Surprisingly, I hadn't realised the BL direction of the manga. Such innocence is so touching.
In a few words, flamboyant art thief meets straitlaced German Nato officer. Nato officer chases after art thief for crimes of theft (the missions); art thief chases after Nato officer for love (the escapades). They meet KGB agents, British agents, oil sheikhs. In the midst of the lighthearted pursuits for duty, love and vengeance, the mangaka weaves in real events like the fall of the Shah in Iran, the Cold War into her stories, I do declare that there is never a dull moment when we read the stories.
