"Hey!!! You're going to get dirty if you do that!!!" Takaki yelled.
Yamada stuck out his tongue as he lied down on the grass, preparing to go down the hill.
"What if you get hurt?! I'm responsible for you plus I bet mom is going to ground me if you do!" Takaki complained but amused.
Yamada just ignored him and started to roll. He accelerated as time went by and felt a bit dizzy as he closed his eyes. "Oof!" He bumped into something... more like someone. He opened his eyes slowly as his vision wavered. After a few seconds, he realized that he was in Takaki's arms and blushed. What happened to his boldness earlier?
"See? I told you... you look a bit pale right now," Takaki commented.
"It's nothing!" Yamada quickly sat up, brushing away the grass on his jacket.
Takaki chuckled at this and helped him by taking some off his back. Yamada was about to get up when Takaki pulled him down. The little boy flushed as Takaki's hands pet his hair. "You have some stuff in your hair..." Yamada couldn't help but stare at Takaki while the taller boy was doing that.
The older boy's eyes caught with his and Yamada turned away by reflex, cheeks turning visibly pink. "Look! A blooming flower... isn't it pretty?" Takaki pointed out.
Yamada looked to where Takaki was pointing at. A red flower slightly drooping to the left side, its petals glistening from the droplet of dew that was left. Takaki reached over and broke off the stem. Yamada blinked with curiosity. His breath got caught in his throat as Takaki held his face, placing the flower behind his right ear through his hair.
"You're so cute, Ryo-chan..." Takaki murmured, smoothing out the younger boy's hair.
The little boy nodded slowly, cheeks tinted pink.
"You could totally pass as a girl," Takaki added with a grin.
Yamada pouted, furrowing his eyebrows together and raised his hand to remove the flower when Takaki grabbed him by the wrist.
"Leave it on," Takaki requested.
"Why?" Yamada asked, pursing his lips in confusion.
"No reason. You don't have to..." Takaki mumbled, eyes flashing a little hurt.
Yamada thought for a moment. "I'll keep it on if you give me something in return." He closed his eyes, smiling and expecting a hug. He felt Takaki moving closer and opened them slowly . Takaki's lips brushed against his cheek briefly. Yamada blushed harder than ever. "Takaki-kun... Is it wrong of me to think I have a chance?" he asked, anxious for an answer.
Takaki looked off in a distance. "Somehow I don't feel as sad as I thought I would be after Kei broke up with me... Maybe it's because of you," Takaki mused.
Does this mean what he think he means? Yamada knew he shouldn't get his hopes up too high.
"I guess you could say... it's going to take some time," Takaki finally concluded.
---------------------------
"Arioka-kun?"
Daiki turned to the source of the voice. "Takaki-kun! What are you doing here?"
Takaki brought forward Yamada, wrapping his arms around the younger boy's smaller frame. "This is Yamada Ryosuke. My..." He paused for a moment before saying, "Stepbrother?"
For some reason when Takaki said that word, Yamada didn't feel irritated. Maybe it was because their relationship had changed? He know it did but he couldn't pinpoint it out.
Daiki raised an eyebrow and extended his hand. "Nice to meet you! I'm Arioka Daiki."
Yamada just nodded, shaking his hand.
"So what are you doing here?" Takaki asked.
Daiki's cheeks turned visibly pink. "Oh... I'm waiting for someone..."
"Ooh... do I know this someone? Possibly... your boyfriend? Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
"Oh... well... umm..." Daiki started, shifting uncomfortably.
'Dai-chan!" A familiar voice called out.
Yamada knew who it belonged to right away.
Inoo ran towards them, panting. "I... am sooo sorry... I'm late... Dai-cha-" He stopped and his eyes widened, breaking into a smile. "Yuya!"
Yamada held onto Takaki's arm tightly, glancing up nervously to see if there was any different reaction, meeting up with Inoo.
Takaki's expression didn't falter as he too, grinned back. "Hey Kei. Sorry but we were just interrogating your date... I mean boyfriend." Takaki tilted his chin towards the scarlet Daiki.
Inoo blushed red while whacking Takaki's arm playfully. "Shut up, Yuya. Dai-chan is cuter than you would ever be."
"But I don't need to be cute since Ryo-chan is the cutest." Takaki retorted, leaning his head against Yamada's. The little boy blushed at the compliment. "And besides, I'm happy for you two."
"Say Yamada-kun, do you mind if I borrow Yuya for a moment?" Inoo asked. "And sorry Dai-chan. I promise this will be quick."
Yamada frowned. He seriously didn't like the idea of them talking alone. Why couldn't they talk here? He unwillingly nodded as the two older boys walked off.
"Ne Yamada-kun... Are you and Takaki-kun... together?" Daiki asked curiously.
Yamada shook his head. "Ne I'm not even sure what we are anymore... but I know it's probably not just siblings anymore... but then we aren't going out... I don't know."
Daiki smiled. "I'm just relieved. I mean... Inoo-chan was crying right after he broke up with Takaki-kun."
"Eh? Do you know why he did that? I mean Inoo-chan was the one who made the decision."
"Umm.... I don't know much about the situation but I know that Inoo-chan can read people easily. Haha I guess that's how he found out about my feelings for him," Daiki chirped.
Read people easily?
---------------------------
Takaki glanced at the clouds. "So... Dai-chan huh?"
Inoo nodded, leaning against the railing.
"Kei..." he said softly.
"Hmm?" It seemed like he knew that Takaki was going to talk to him.
"At first I was really confused in why you broke up with me. I thought to myself, what did I do wrong? What did Ryo-chan have to do with any of this? How did he affect our relationship?" Takaki began.
"And...?" Inoo turned to see Takaki struggling to find the right words.
"I hate the fact that you can see through people's heart so easily," Takaki continued, pursing his lips. "And also made me do all this thinking. I must have killed a lot of brain cells doing that."
Inoo laughed softly. "It was probably the hardest decision I had ever made in my life. But now I have Dai-chan. And I'm happy."
There was a period of silence but Takaki broke it. "Thanks for everything..."
Inoo smiled. "Have you told him yet?"
Takaki shook his head. "I'm gonna take it slow."
"Poor Yamada-kun. Watch what happens when he falls in love with another guy!" Inoo teased.
"What? Hey!" Takaki pushed Inoo's shoulder lightly.
"You should've seen the look on your face just now. It was priceless." Inoo giggled. "Okay we better go now. I wouldn't want Yamada-kun to make me wear a kimono again."
"Wait... he did that on purpose?" Takaki asked in disbelief.
"Geesh. You're so slow, Yuya," Inoo commented, strolling away.
---------------------------
"Takaki-kun?" Yamada called out.
"Yes, Ryo-chan?"
Yamada fidgeted and struggled to find the right words without sounding... "What did you and Inoo-chan talk about?"
Takaki stroked his chin, deep in thought before answering with "It's a secret."
Yamada couldn't help but frown. "You and Inoo-chan seem so... close."
"Why, of course. After all, we were together for quite a while. I think we're closer than ever now."
The little boy grimaced. "Oh... is that so?" He turned away and sulked, pulling his legs to his chest.
Takaki chuckled and hugged Yamada from behind. "Yeah... but we're better off as friends."
Yamada sighed in relief.
"Don't tell me... you were... jealous?" Takaki whispered into his ear, starting the younger boy.
"How could I not be?" Yamada murmured sadly.
"Kei already has Dai-chan..." Takaki assured him.
"But still..." Yamada felt extremely insecure. Takaki wasn't his boyfriend...
"Ryo-chan. Look at me." Yamada turned slightly and saw Takaki's serious face. "There's nothing between me and Kei anymore. So don't worry about it, okay?"
Yamada bit his bottom lip and buried his face in Takaki's clothes, arms around his waist.
"Because Ryo-chan is the only one in my heart," Takaki mumbled so softly that Yamada couldn't hear.
"Did you say something, Takaki-kun?" Yamada asked through muffled words.
"Nope," Takaki answered, stroking Yamada's hair.
---------------------------
"Ne, I'm going out to buy groceries, okay?" Takaki stuffed the wallet inside his pocket.
"Takaki-kun! I want to go with you!" Yamada chirped.
"No, Ryo-chan. Stay here."
"Whyyy?" Yamada whined, tugging on the sleeve of Takaki's jacket and giving him the best puppy look he could do.
"Bad Ryo-chan. Stay here and be a good boy." Takaki patted Yamada's head twice before reaching for the door knob.
"I'm not a dog!!!" Yamada crossed his arms over his chest, pouting
"Who was the one giving me the kicked puppy face a minute ago?" Takaki smirked as Yamada's face fell.
"That was... uhh... umm..." Yamada tried making up an excuse on the spot.
"I'll be back as soon as possible, okay?" Takaki bent down and gave a kiss on his cheek, causing the younger boy to blush. Then he left, leaving a dazed Yamada.
He snapped out of it and then frowned. He still wanted to go! Why wouldn't Takaki let him go? He dragged his feet towards Takaki's room, grabbing the older boy's other jacket and throwing himself on the bed. Yamada sulked to himself as he clung onto the clothing and breathed in Takaki's scent. He couldn't help it since it was practically a habit but Takaki never found out. Yamada laid his head on Takaki's pillow and rested there, waiting for him to come back.
---------------------------
Takaki pushed the cart, glancing down at the grocery list that his mom wrote. He had finally gotten everything when he spotted some strawberry milk on sale. He cocked his head to the side and pursed his lips, tapping his foot, full of thought. He took out his wallet and calculated about how much everything was including the tax. Finally after a few minutes, he smiled, taking a few cartons.
Suddenly, his cell phone rang. "Moshi moshi? Hey! What's up? Haven't talked or seen you in a while... Fine I'll pay a visit later... I just need to tell Ryo-chan... See ya." He hung up the phone and went to the cash register to pay.
---------------------------
When he got home, the house was quiet. His parents were still at work and put the bags onto the counter while keeping one bag for himself. Takaki tiptoed to Yamada's room and saw no one there. Then he tried his own room, cracking the door open softly. He saw Yamada laying on his side, back to him.
"Takaki-kun... when will you be back?" Yamada asked the white wall, poking it with one finger.
Takaki sneaked in quietly and walked over to the younger boy without him noticing, seeing the figure cuddling with his jacket tightly.
"Why didn't you take me with you?" Yamada continued, tracing kanjis on the wall, forming Takaki's name. "Mou... I already miss you..." he murmured, sighing.
Suddenly Yamada felt an arm slinging over his shoulders and a creak on the bed as warmth emanated from the older boy. "I miss you, too, Ryo-chan."
"Ehhh? When did you get back?" Yamada flushed and hoped that Takaki didn't hear what he said before that last line.
"Like just now," Takaki replied. "So I'm guessing you're also the culprit of stealing my sweaters and clothes?'
Yamada turned red. "I was... using it as uhh... blanket!" he tried lying.
"Suuure. Mmm... this is for you." Takaki brought the carton of strawberry milk in front of Yamada, placing it in his hands.
Yamada blinked a few times before saying, "Arigatou..." Truthfully, he was really happy. More than he had been in the past. Yamada snuggled in Takaki's embrace, admiring the pinkness of the carton. Maybe he should keep it for a while..
---------------------------
"Yama-chan!" Chinen called out.
Yamada smiled at him. He hadn't seen Chinen for a little while, not since last time. He had so much to tell him and Ryutaro. "Hey, Chinen! I have something to tell you!"
"Ooh really? I do, too!" Chinen exclaimed, pulling Yamada's arm in the direction of his house. "Let's talk at my place."
They walked to his house and Chinen closed the door. "I brought Yama-chan!" His voice echoed through his house.
Ryutaro suddenly appeared in front of Yamada. He, too, looked as excited as Chinen. Yamada wondered what happened.
"Close your eyes!" Ryutaro commanded.
Yamada raised an eyebrow. "Why?"
"Just do it!" Chinen chirped, flailing.
Yamada obliged, confused. He felt a pair of warm hands over his eyes. "Guess who it is!"
"And no it's not me or Ryu-chan," Chinen hinted.
The little boy didn't like guessing but was curious. "Mmm... I dunno!" he replied, smiling.
"Yama-chan~" A voice rang in his ear. He could've sworn he heard that voice before. He couldn't quite put his finger on it. "Mou... you don't remember me?"
Yamada touched the culprit's hands, noticing that it was big yet slender. He felt a sense of deja vu wash over him as he remembered the exact same words coming from... "Yuto-kun?" he guessed in disbelief.
"Yay! You got it!" the said boy cheered.
Yamada stumbled over as Yuto tackled from behind. "Eep! I haven't seen you in forever!"
"I knooow!" the hyper Yuto drawled.
