Fifth Memory After a while, Takaki got really tired and fell asleep on Daiki's shoulders, hugging him. When the younger boy felt Takaki going limp and breathing at a regular pace, he pulled back a bit and shifted the latter’s head onto his lap slowly. There, Daiki watched Takaki, who suddenly looked like he was having a nightmare. His eyes were squeezed tightly shut and his body turned from side to side. Daiki grabbed onto Takaki’s hands and stroked them with his thumbs.
“Taka-chan…” Daiki called out gently.
Takaki stopped moving as much, but still seemed like he was in pain.
“Taka-chan…” Daiki repeated, brushing Takaki’s fringes to the side and stroking his hair tenderly.
Takaki’s expression softened a bit and clutched to Daiki’s other hand tightly. Tears flowed down the sleeping boy’s face ever so slowly. “Dai-chan…” he whispered.
Daiki’s eyes clouded with sadness as he wiped the droplets with the back of his hand. He knew Takaki never acted like this before… where was the hyper, happy Takaki that he saw everyday? Was he holding it all in? Forcing smiles? Now that he thought about it, Takaki knew more about him than he knew about the other. He always ranted on about his whole life with Takaki… Daiki scolded himself for being selfish. What about Takaki’s needs? His wants? His personal feelings? His thoughts? The more he thought about it, the more guilt he felt.
Takaki’s face scrunched up again as he stirred a bit in his sleep again.
The younger boy leaned down, planting a light kiss on his forehead on impulse. As he drew back, Takaki’s eyes fluttered open gradually. Daiki froze on the spot. They both stared at each other for a few seconds until Daiki broke the eye contact, blushing. "Umm... I... uhh... s-sorry..." Daiki stammered.
"What for?" Takaki asked in a low voice. He reached up and touched Daiki's cheek. The latter turned a darker shade of pink. "You didn't do anything wrong... so what are you sorry for?"
"I dunno... I feel that... it might be my fault or something... I'm not exactly good at comforting people... and I... care about you a lot... I'm worried..." Daiki answered, eyes full of concern.
"Don't worry about me... it's not worth it. I don't deserve your kindness... You're too nice to me... given me so much... while I haven't given you much in return..." Takaki lowered his hands, placing them on his stomach.
"How can I not worry about you? You're my best friend... And what do you mean? Deserving kindness? What kind of talk is that? You shouldn't say that because... I'm the one that hasn't given you anything... You've always listened to my complaints and little problems... I want to do that, too! I want to know more about you, Taka-chan... So please tell me... don't keep it all in... that gets me more worried..." Daiki looked down miserably at Takaki.
"I... have no idea what I'm saying... just ignore me," Takaki muttered.
"NO, TAKA-CHAN!" Daiki exclaimed, startling Takaki. "Please don't say that... I just wished that you would depend on me more... it wouldn't be a bother for me..."
Takaki's mouth curved into a frown, giving an intent look at Daiki.
"D-did I do something wrong? Say something bad? I'm sorry if I did!" Daiki panicked when he saw Takaki's unreadable eyes.
"Dai-chan... when you're with me... life just seems... worth living... and happier by each day..." Takaki finally said, breaking into a small, genuine smile. "Please take care of me from now on..."
"What? D-don't give me so much credit..." Daiki was now flustered especially when Takaki sat up and gave a peck on his cheek.
As long as there was one person... that's all he needed... knowing that there was someone who cared... gave him happiness... Takaki felt that he was actually a part of Daiki's heart, even if that piece was small... If he hadn't met Daiki... who knows what he would've done by now? Takaki shook his head at the thought. All that mattered was the present... the future... and Daiki... just Daiki...
"You don't know how much you saved me..." Takaki whispered so softly that Daiki didn't even hear... he was too busy fidgeting and blushing over the kiss.
