Reason For Insomnia #287: Scary Film Scares You Sleepless.
This is actually the first time I've used my iPod Touch for updating LiveJournal. I'm more used to Semagic/journalling in HTML so we'll see how this goes.
I have an entry coming up on the events of my weekend, but today I need to get something off my chest if I have a hope in hell of sleeping tonight.
Okay. Here goes. How many of you have seen John Carpenter's The Thing (1982), starring Kurt Russell? How disgusting is that film?! I don't mean 'disgusting' like crappy acting and poor storyline, oh no... I mean genuinely, gut-twistingly vile. This is a horror film that can truly be counted within its genre.
I'm not usually affected by scary films but I actually felt paranoid walking home in case some grotesque alien yomped me en-route and assimilated me in ways only a truly fucked-up special effects man could create. I vowed to get home and straight on to Skyrim to erase the horrors from my mind. I didn't want to look up at the sky because that's where the Thing of the movie came from.
As far as horror films go, then, it's truly brilliant. Probably the only scary horror film I've seen, in fact. It blends hideous, dripping, corpse-like abominations with psychological horror (you're kept guessing throughout who's the Thing, who's its next victim and so on, creating some tense moments for both viewer and characters), all pulled together with some fantastic acting and an impeccably eerie soundtrack composed by Ennio Morricone, who has written hundreds of film soundtracks across a vast range of genres - notable works being 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' and 'Inglourious Basterds'. I give Morricone such an extended mention because his soundtrack made an already freaky film ten times more disturbing.
An added bonus: Kurt Russell's hair. It is magnificent in this film.
Today's been a day of lazing in front of the telly, both at home and at Jason's. The postman brought me an exciting delivery today: a pack of flyers for the Cambridge Rock Festival 2012. Guess who's playing on the Saturday? Caravan! No way am I missing the chance to see them again - seeing them last August was fantastic.
Now then, I'd best get some sleep... if I can, after watching that film...
