Happy New Year to one and all. There's not much on my schedule for today. However, it is major bowl game watching day and I am required to watch the Rose Bowl around 3:30pm my time with my Illinois blanket at the ready. I have to support the team of choice in my family. At least half a dozen members of my mother's side of the family have ties to the University of Illinois so it's no wonder we bleed orange and blue.
So...
Hail to the orange
Hail to the blue
Hail alma matter ever so true
We love no other so let our motto be
Victory Illinois varsity
It was at this point, before the NCAA threatened to ban all our sports from post season play, that
the Chief would continue his authentic Native American dance in his authentic costume and head dress given to the university by a Native American tribe. I swear someone bribed the Seminoles to say someone on horseback the entire game wasn't degrading to their culture. It was only seven minutes at the most that student would be out on the field as The Chief and they had some pretty strict requirements for him to be the official symbol (he was never considered the mascot by the school) of the school. The most important of them was that he had to be an Eagle Scout. Enough on the NCAA, FSU, and the damn pressure they put on Illinois thus killing nearly eighty-one years of time honored tradition and school pride and loyalty before this turns into a rant.
*Sheds a few tears over the loss of Chief Illiniwek*
Hail to the new year may it be a great one.
