I've been re-reading Planetes recently. Just as an aside, when my mind wanders.
I've been trying to figure out why I like it so much. It's in a setting I like, near-future cislunar space. It's hard tech, but not so crunchy as to be prohibitive.
I really like the character development. The first issue is just...*bam*....all of Yuri's story. And the interaction between Tanabe and Hachi is great, too. Their relationship is fun to watch develop.
There's lots of talk of independance. Freedom is a big theme in the book. Characters striving for their dreams, regardless of the reasons. People doing what they want, not just what they have to do. Lots of introspection.
If you haven't, I recommend Planetes. It's a few years old, and I believe it's fully translated. It's a Tokoypop release.
