I am a Halo fanboy. I apologize, but I just got it.

I knew it sounded familiar! "This is how the world ends."

It's from the Cortana Letters! The implications of this are massive....ponderous! The fiction laid down nearly a decade ago is finally being reintroduced.

There are three swords that Bungie has named in their games. Durandal, Joyeuse, and Cortana. They are also the names of three AI in the Bungie-verse. Durandal was the helper AI in the Marathon games. Cortana is the helper AI in the Halo games.

Bah, anyway, in traditional Bungie style the trailer is full of secrets and cyphers. Cortana saying "I am your shield, I am your sword" is a very big thing. It could mean that she's finally gone Rampant, a condition that describes unchecked growth of an AI. The results are usually very bad, but occasionally, in the case of Durandal, the AI achieves a form of stability. And then usually becomes God.

"This is how the world ends." is from a series of mysterious emails used as extremely shadowy advertisements for Halo. Before Halo was even announced, these emails were circulating. They were from a person that called themselved Cortana, and they sounded like the ravings of a madman. That phrase "This is how the world ends" is from the first of those letters.

That Bungie is hearkening back to these old messages is very, very cool. My mind burns with the possibilities.

Buuuuurns.
