I just got home from grocery shopping. My mom asked me to pick up a few things, including sauerkraut. The only sauerkraut available locally that does not contain sulphites comes in a can. This will be relevant in a moment.

I put my grocery bags - two, lightly laden, from two different stores because of the sauerkraut - on the passenger seat while I drove home. When I went to get out of the car, I grabbed the grocery bags to bring them out with me, lifting them between my body and the steering wheel. They ended up at face height.

I forgot there was a can in one bag. I forgot that there was little enough in the bags that they would swing freely.

I hit myself in the jaw with the edge of a sauerkraut can.

I've got a welt now. It'll probably bruise. I teared up in the car, desperately resolved not to actually cry because I am a grown woman, dammit, and then came inside and began to explain to my mother what happened and ended up crying in her arms.

There's something about getting hit in the face, I think. I mean, besides the pain.

Anyway, I'm fine. And I'll be more careful next time.
