Chapter 3:
The Sound in the Back of My Mind

Whenever he closed his eyes, he would go back to a certain memory in the back of his mind. The wristwatch screamed a two O’clock at him annoyingly for every five minute interval he burnt it with his glance. Grilling hot of summer that day was still fresh, as if it was just a moment ago. That hearty giggling sound of a boy just behind his back rang in his ears. It was of pure happiness. A part of him felt irrated since the sound was a complete opposite of his current mood. How would he smile when his parents’ last night row replayed in his head? Smiling was never be his first attempt that day, let alone laughing. Nevertheless there was another part of him feeling lost in the sound. It was simply beautiful melody. The only sound penetrated his mourning. He couldn’t supress the urge to turn around and find the source of such immense merry…

It was too late. Whoever that was, he had disappeared from the school hallway to who knows where. But since that day, Yamada Ryosuke decided to find him, the host of such beautiful laugh. Because the teenager child inside him had yearned for a childhood he never had.

Everything was black. The limbs attached to his body felt weird. Those didn’t seem like his own parts of body. He tried to open his lids but they were extremely heavy. Panic aroused in him when all his attempts to move failed. Even his mind was foggy. As soon as he gave up, he laid still and did the only thing he could do: breathing.

He was alone in the darkness. Nonetheless by the time he remembered the eerie moment when he jumped off the roof, he didn’t mind it. He counted second to second of his remaining time in the living world. It might felt long, he reminded himself, but it wpuld be over sooner than I thought. Yet every bit of his body screamed an impatiently. He knew the longer he stayed alive, the more he was aware of the threatening loneliness.

Instinctively, he did the other thing he thought he could never do: hearing.

At first, he heard someone’s talking. It was excrutiatingly pathetic for that one to talk monologue. Sometimes it was just a story. Sometimes it was just a rain of rants. He never knew that such topics ever existed in a hospital when he realized one thing. The voice was close to him, like really close that he could grasp everything. It talked to him, waiting patiently for his heartbeat to answer - he didn’t even remember ordering his heart to beat in morse-sign if that was possible. But whoever by his side, he spoke naturally as if he didn’t talk to a comatose boy.

I wonder how he did that.

Anyway, Yamada was glad that someone was out there behind the veil of darkness. And his every “get well soon” wish was like a string that one by one kept him in place to finally pulled him up to see the blinding light once more.

But it wasn’t the only one. Besides, who was that owner of the voice Yamada should listen? The brunette was a stubborn young man who never spoke to strangers. Well, the most surprising fact was that ‘sound’ again… He thought he was dreaming of it. But he listened and listened more and was finally sure. It was that laughing sound of the past. The sound he had unintentionally left behind just for a selfish thinking.

“So, how do you feel, Yamada-kun? Any dizziness, nausea, stiffness?” Takaki beamed.

“Will Chinen-kun come here again that now I’m no longer comatose?” Yamada stared longingly at the door.

“I’m sure he will. He has been waiting for you for months,” the doctor smiled kindly and began the check-up procedure. While working with his equipment, he tried to communicate to his patient. “Can you remember your name and age? Your parents’ name-”

“Where is Chinen?”

“It is still his shift in children ward. Loves children more than anything, that guy does! Now, Yamada-kun, would you-”

“Can I see him?”

“Not before I finish checking you up and other things, such as exercises. You need them before you can sit on a wheelchair. So let me do this quick now.”

“Sorry,” Yamada flushed and bowed in embarrassment. Other than Chinen whose face was still a mystery for him, his blanket was the most interesting for him right now.

The moment the clock struck nine, the door of Yamada’s room slided open. The brunette jumped on his bed to a sitting position and beamed his brightest. A mop of black hair poked inside. It was a boy no older than him. His eyes disappeared as he broke a fit of giggles. And God… he was so pretty.

“Impatient, aren’t we?” Chinen practically bounced to his bedside and settled down rather childishly, squealing, “How are you today, Yamada-kun?”

Even without a heart monitor, Yamada knew his heart had skipped a beat. Though technically Chinen’s voice had resided in his being for a long time, it was his very first time meeting the young boy personally. The brunette couldn’t take his eyes off the latter. He was amazed at the amount of energy in Chinen’s small frame. Before he knew what he was doing, he had studied the tantalizing milky white skin under the paramedic suit. Gazing up to meet the dark brown orbs, they were so alive! His heart beat faster, pumping more blood to his face that he felt his cheeks burned. His breath came in shortness. He felt so light that he could fly over the moon.

Chinen tilted his head, never losing his smile. “Yamada-ku-mmmp!”

Oh, hush. Either it was his annoyance of that high-pitched voice or his poor brain which failed to restrain his wild-self, Yamada could careless. It appeared that the reason was the second, though. How could he neglect such adorable existence as Chinen Yuri? Whatever that was, there was a push inside his mind that prompting him crawl closer to the innocent boy in front of him. He craddled the cheek that instantly stung him with its softness. His mind was a complete blank as he captured those pink plump lips with his. For a good moment he felt their smoothness and the inviting warmth from Chinen’s breath. But they soon hypnotized him to do more. He pulled away few centimeters to capture again those lips longingly, lovingly. He nibbled carefully yet passionately the younger’s lip, smirking when he heard a loud gasp followed by a rush of hot stream of air. Yamada slided his tongue in, battled a dominance against the little one’s surprised and unskillful one, to claim every spot driving him crazy.

“I’m spectacular,” he panted as he pulled away. His smirk grew even more at the furiously blushing Chinen Yuri.
