Prologue

April 25th, 2012

It was 9 PM and the last visiting hours had just passed. Chinen Yuri walked down the deserted hall of Kitagawa Hospital. He had a smile nicely displayed on his face, humming cheerful melody that popped up in his head. A clip of files was in one of his arms. He wore a neat white suit of a doctor, though he was not yet one.

Since he had graduated high school, his grandfather had personally offered him a training to become the heir of his position: the Head of Hospital. It meant a full restriction in Hospital, learning numerous things for hours almost non-stop. Each day was tough for young Chinen Yuri. He was not even twenty-one yet. However, he had not had another choice to make anyway. Not that his grandfather did not give freedom to choose. He just did not know what kind of life teenagers his age lived. He did not know what purikura was, how to battle in game centers, neither why love was substantial to his mental growth. His future used to be dictated by the elders of his family. And he did not say a ‘no’ for their decisions.

Nevertheless, the change of different route for his night patrol seemed to sprout something. At first, it was just his random mood acted up. He stopped dead at his track as he glanced at the opened window on his left. Inside, lied a patient. 60% of his body was wrapped up, including his face. With his blankets on, he looked like a mummy. The hair sticking out the sheets of the bandage was autumn brown. His face looked young and peaceful in his deep slumber, albeit as pale as the pillow he laid on. Yuri was positive that he was awake and smiling, he would have the most handsome face he had ever seen. But that was not what interested Yuri.

He remembered snippets of conversation among his colleagues during lunch break several days ago. In the ward he was, there was a patient that had never received any visitors. The nurses were the ones opening and closing his windows, talking at him occasionally (since he was unresponsive), cheering him to keep in the world of living, and many more. They said, the poor lad had been hospitalized for two months of suicidal attempt, jumping off his school roof. He was lucky that a team of doctors were able to safe his thin life. And had not signaled waking up since then.

Yuri peeped at the clip and saw a name under the patient’s number of registration: Yamada Ryosuke (18). He is my age, he mused with a frown. Yuri walked to the door and opened it. He soon astonished at the sight that welcome him. Without the window glasses, he could see better the color of the lad’s face had gone few shades. The soft beeping from the machine monitoring his heart was drumming lazily in Yuri’s ears. The atmosphere hanging the bed was cold that it was heart-wrenching. As Yuri glided close to the bedside aisle, he felt as if happiness was sucked away from him. Loneliness radiated through the still body. It was too strong that it affected Yuri more than usual.

He took a sharp breath and placed his free hand atop the cold one. Slowly, he rubbed his thumb against the unexpectedly smooth skin. Yuri studied the boy more and soon founded that he did not look like a suicidal attempt victim when he slept like that. He mustered a weak smile. Something twirled in his stomach as he did so.

“Hello, Yamada-kun,” he would not use ‘-san’ since they were the same age. “Ah, my name is Chinen Yuri. Everyone calls me Chinen, but my family calls me Yuri. You may call me what you like.” A soft chuckle escaped his lips. He thought it was odd to talk without expecting an answer, but it was fun at the same time. “It is my first time seeing you. My friends often talk about you. I think there’s nothing wrong to pay you a visit after work and I was right.” He began telling stories about his background, what he liked and what he hated. Even his dream that simply to be essential to someone’s life.

“It’s nice to talk to you, Yamada-kun,” he ended his story as his wristwatch allerted him that 10 PM was five minutes to go. He still had to report his learning session to his grandfather. That old man Kitagawa did not like could be very impatient. “I’ll see you again soon. Get well, ‘kay?” With that, he retreated from the bedside. He threw one last glance and flashed his brightest smile, not caring that sleeping boy would not be able to respond.

Yuri was too occupied with the strange feelings fluttering inside him. It was a light feeling, that somehow he felt at ease. It might be because Yamada did not make any reaction that made him nervous. He could talk anything he wanted as if the two boys had known each other for so long. Was it a happiness? But he never felt something anew like that after he talked casually to any other patient. Why should Yamada Ryosuke have to be different? The boy shrugged. Whatever it was, he looked forward the chance to met the latter again. He would like someone he never had to talk about anything but hospital topic.

He closed the blind at the window and walked quietly off the room. He whispered “good night” before he closed the door with a dull click. Unbeknownst to him, the heart-monitor machine beeped excitedly, finally signalling the first improvement in two months record.
