The summer is always a good time to read, as I tend to ignore the necessities of grad school and read what I damn well feel like rather than what I am supposed to be reading, and I've gotten a lot of good reading done, the highlight perhaps being Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age, which does this wonderful blend of cyber- and steampunk, with interesting ideas as to the role of technology and its relationship with mankind. Mmm… Novels of Ideas… Yeah. I've also bee trying to gear up to re-read Siddhartha. Hesse does the inner peace/spelndid isolation thing very well in this one. Though it shows an individual's struggle with himself and the universe, it does so with such a gentle touch that the tension seems to secondary to the protagonist's sense of self. It's really quite moving. I just can't find the necessary relaxation to enjoy it.

I'm a pretentious fucker, aren't I? I suppose that's why I'm teaching English next year.
In other news, I'm now the sound engineer for the county's noontime concerts. This is pretty cool, but the gear makes me want to cry. Anyone know how to replace the diaphragm in an old EV horn? The gear is in pretty rough shape, but it does the job. I would like a real graphic equalizer though. I also dislike the fact we're using a Mackie Powered amp when there's a unused QSC amp just sitting there… We'd need a new board, but that could bring much good… But apparently one of the Commissioners is trying to kill the whole series, so I doubt I'd be able to get any new gear. Oh well.
And I now have 1 pound of Swedish Fish.
