The amendment is to ban gay marriage since Supreme court said it is ok. I think people should be allow to love and marry who they want. It is basic right.
I have a friend who is civil union because they are of the same sex. They had to do a tons of things to get the same benefits as opposite sex couple get.
here are some of the things we get automatically as opposite sex couple when you get married.
1. Name Change - no cost to you.
2. Insurance benefits - You can add a spouse no problem. You can add children no problem. But currently insurance company don't recognize same sex marriage and thus couple can't get insurance coverage (have to be seperate)
3. Power of Attorney - This gives you the right to make decision for your spouse in case of accident, medical, court, etc etc. A spouse can sign for things. A same sex couple have to pay money and get official PAPER saying they give each other power of attorney.
4. Application Process - Generally most application only recognize opposite sex couple. You can fill one out. Same sex doesn't get that right :(
There are tons other but when you get married (opposite sex) you and your spouse automatically get a lot of rights and power toward each other (in the system) which basically that the same sex couple just want the same rights.
P.S. my friend told me there are like 42 items but I can't remember them all.
