“Does it work?”
“Sometimes.”
“And the rest of the time?”
Caldwell looked out over the water, sighed, then turned to look at Elizabeth. “You just give in and worry.”
Elizabeth arched an eyebrow at him in disbelief and then burst out laughing.
“I was so sure you were going to say something like ‘face the fear and move through it’,” she teased.
Caldwell chuckled and shook his head. “And you know what? It doesn’t matter how old your kids get, you still worry.”
“Thanks, Steven. You’re a big comfort.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
The two shared another laugh, settled more comfortably in their chairs on the mainland beach and looked out again toward the water. A group of Athosian children were splashing and laughing a few yards out from the shore but of more interest to them was an attractive young woman, patiently teaching a small boy to swim in the shallow water.
“Your daughter is fitting in well here,” Elizabeth commented with a nod to the pair they were watching. “Carson can’t say enough good things about her and Halling is thrilled that she wants to help set up a clinic on the mainland.”
“Jenna’s a good kid.”
Elizabeth slanted a glance at the older man, hearing the pride behind those simple words.
Catching her look, Caldwell cleared his throat self-consciously and looked down at his hands. “Not that I can take any credit - I didn’t get much time with her after her mother and I split.”
“She turned out just fine, Steven.” Elizabeth laid a hand on his arm and gave it a squeeze. “And she’s here and she’s happy. That should count for something.”
He put a hand over hers and patted it gratefully. “Well, at least she’ll have a damn good role model here,” he said, looking into her eyes and giving her a warm smile.
“Are you hitting on my wife?” a familiar voice drawled.
Caldwell turned and leveled a glare at the two men ambling over.
John automatically froze and added, “Sir” as Lorne practically snapped to attention next to him. It didn’t matter that they were all off duty or that Caldwell was lounging in a beach chair in a loud Hawaiian print shirt; somehow the man still managed to be intimidating.
Making sure to keep Elizabeth between Caldwell and himself, John sidled over to stand next to her, Lorne close behind.
“Dinner’s almost ready. Thought I’d better come get everyone before Rodney and Ronon hit the table.”
He looked over toward the water at the sound of a small voice gleefully shouting, “Daddy!”; a wide grin splitting his face as the young boy who had been learning to swim sprinted out of the water and made a beeline for him.
“Hey buddy!” John caught him on the run and swung him overhead, much to his squealing delight. “Hungry?”
“Yeah!” He settled happily in John’s arms and then spying Lorne, leaned around his father to grin at him. “Hi, Uncle Evan! Are you here to kiss Dr. Jenna some more?”
There was a terrifying silence, during which John turned wide eyes to Elizabeth, Elizabeth tried to keep a straight face, Lorne fervently prayed for a Wraith attack and all three studiously avoided looking in Caldwell’s direction.
“Alright Papa, what’s going on?” Jenna demanded, as she approached the silent group. She stood with her hands on her hips and looked everyone over. If nothing else, the panicked look on Lorne’s face and the thunderous one on her father’s told her all she needed to know.
“Honestly,” she said with a sigh. “You’d think that moving to another galaxy would give me some privacy. But noooo…*I* have to have a father with an overprotective attitude *and* an interstellar battlecruiser!”
Walking over to her father’s side, she leaned down and dropped an affectionate kiss on his bald head. “Now stop worrying about me, Papa,” she said with mock severity. Pausing, she looked critically at the top of his head and then added in her best doctor voice, “And use some sunscreen for heaven’s sake!”
As John and Elizabeth exchanged an amused look, Caldwell blustered and argued but ended up agreeing to stop by the infirmary with her later.
Moving to stand by Lorne, Jenna tucked her hand in the crook of his elbow and tugged him forward. “C’mon, Evan. I think there are a couple of hamburgers and beers with our names on them.”
Looking over her shoulder at John, she grinned. “Are you gonna bring my other favorite guy along, Colonel?”
“Yes, ma’am,” John and his son said at the same time, with matching grins and equally messy hair. He glanced over his shoulder at his wife but a smile and nod of her head told him to go ahead; jogging off, they caught up with Jenna and Lorne as they headed down the beach, calling to the Athosian children in the water to come and join them as well.
Rising, Caldwell held out his hand to help Elizabeth up. “Have you found out yet whether it’s going to be a boy or girl?” he asked, smiling as she placed a hand on her prominent belly and patted it.
“Yes,” she nodded happily. “We’re going to have a girl!”
“Good Lord!” He shook his head. “She’ll have Sheppard wrapped around her little finger,” he warned. “And then when she gets older you’ll have to contend with the whole dating thing,” he added grimly.
“Not if John has his way,” Elizabeth replied as she took the arm he offered.
At Caldwell’s questioning glance she slanted a mischievous smile up at him. “He wants to make you and Ronon her godfathers.”
Returning the pleased grin that spread across his face, she linked her arm with his, and the two friends moved off at a leisurely pace.
