I think it's because people reach for some sort of goal, but once they reach it, then what? There is no true goal it's all just hte daily grind until that person gives up. But yeah, he doesn't expalin how it ruins everything.

Perhaps there was more context to this quote than what was given, or he went off on some tangent without explaining his main idea.

Maybe I'll replace it with something better.
