I am so freaking dead. The Fireplace Challenge is ending in about three days time, and I haven't even finished my very first proof-read session, especially since I'm going through a terrible mental block at the moment, as well as the fact that I have no energy to spend thinking of how to get through it. It could be worse though, I could have not even finished the first draft by now. Thank heavens I actually finished the whole story (though of course it's not fit to be seen yet). Already, some of the others have finished their stories, and it's already up on their profiles, proof-read and everything. In fact, they are actually offering their proof-reading services to the people who have not finished yet. At the very least, I think I would need about two more days before I submit it, which is very similar to cutting it very close, as Flame Rising once told another forum member.
I highly doubt that I'm going to win though, or even appear in the top five, especially since the other forum members seem to be very good at their writing. So far, I have not read anything by them though, because most of them are not in the same fandoms as me, either that or because I can't find any of their stories in the fandoms I frequent. Of course, I could check their profiles, but I rarely visit profiles anyway, with the exception of my favourite authors. I guess I could stand a chance though, because one of the other users added me into his favourite author's list, though I'm not sure whether I can use that as a sure-fire indicator, since he is from the same country as me. From what I see in the Furnace though, and the aplomb with which they disperse their advice, I can assume that they really are very experienced.
Basically, the challenge is to come up with a one-shot featuring a well balanced and written OC as the main character, and how they interact with the canon characters. My OC is named Nakamura Aiko, and the one-shot is about how she learns that she is a rather unsavoury character at times from a canon character named Sohma Hatsuharu. I can't decide whether to place this in the Fruits Basket or Vampire Knight section, because it is set in Cross Academy, which is a school in the Vampire Knight manga, while Haru is a Fruits Basket character. However, that is the least of my worries, because I'm not sure whether I can actually get it up in the first place, since I have so many problems with the storyline itself. The dialogue between Haru and Aiko is strained at best, and not in a good way, because I can't seem to make them tick, and I've already strayed off my word limit, and I'm not sure what parts to get rid off.
On the bright side, I need the dialogue to be strained between Haru and Aiko because they are not very close to each other, but I'm worried that the dialogue would not make sense. I'm afraid that I would end up making Haru OC while Aiko ends up being a Mary-sue. I don't really see Aiko as a Mary-sue, because I made her seem like a bitch to her other classmates, which is what I want her audience to see her as, though it's a bit hard to say whether they see it the way I see it. One thing for sure though, the other users are sure to have comments for my one-shot, and even if I end up humiliating myself, at least I would be able to learn from the experience.
