Robin and Sherry

Part II in the continuing series of Pets I Have Known.

After Tippy died we didn't have any pet for a while, and then we got an iguana, I don't remember why. This was right around the time we got our place in the Catskills. One day my littlest brother observed that iguanas were not very cuddly as pets go and we began looking for a dog again.

My mom's mistake was bringing all four of us and leaving my dad at home. We found the last two of the litter, sisters, and we overwhelmed her and came home with both. If Tippy was the dog from hell, poor guy, Robin and Sherry were made in heaven. They were black and white terrier-sheltie mix looking mutts. I named Robin because she had a brown mask over her eyes which reminded me of Batman's sidekick and then Sherry because Robin Hood - Sherwood Forest. Robin was smaller and more wiry, with a high-strung personality. She had more of the terrier in her; she would grab a prey by the neck and shake until dead. Sherry was placid and sweet. Bless their hearts, they were wonderful travelers who would curl up in the back seat and sleep all the way to the country place. They loved it there. They had free run, and Robin would hunt.

While they were still young I moved away and began my own pet collection which I will write about separately. But Robin and Sherry lived with my folks and my brothers for many happy years. Robin went first, and fast. Sherry lingered on for a couple of years more, growing frailer and more incontinent until the day when she looked up at my mom with that "why am I still here?" look we have all seen and it was time for the one-way trip. Although I had been in Chicago for some years by this time, I was still sad to hear of each of their passing. They were without question the best dogs we'd ever had.
