As I went through security at Sydney airport, a group of my closest Aussie friends chanted, "RPA! RPA! RPA!"I turned back and looked at them; they all had these big grins on their faces. RPA was of course the nickname I earned for my stay at the Royal Prince Alfred hospital. When I glanced back, I spotted two of the girls beginning to well up. I smiled back at them, waved, and turned the corner.
I may never see them again, and it hurts.
Too often, people have hearts that are a bit to the right or too low, but these people had hearts that were always in the right place. Their sincere friendship made me feel good about who I was.
Now, there are half dozen new American Study Abroad students at Johns, and I am jealous- really jealous. They are laughing with MY friends, sleeping in MY bed, and discovering a little bit everyday how awesome MY aussies are.
Most Sydney students aren't on facebook! They don't use AIM. Phone calls are expensive. I am terrible with writing e-mails. I want to live vicariously at Johns through their wacky stories; I want to be kept apprised of their relationships and even hear complaints about classes once in a while. But most of all, I want to be more than just a one semester blip on their radar.
