We had a great little event in my Shire of Coppertree this weekend. The Cook's Collegium gave people opportunities to cook, to take classes, to taste wonderful food, and to socialize with each other. People were really enthusiastic about the freedom they had to enjoy themselves and their friends. We even had a small fencing tourney for which the combatants got prizes such as chocolate and home-baked cookies.
Baron Daniel del Cavallo showed up, even though he had to come in a wheelchair as he is not yet fully recovered from his accident. It was great seeing him and feeding him a variety of dishes.
This event was the brainchild of Duchess Rowan, who made up baskets of different food ingredients with little stories to go with them. ("Your Viking husband is home from a long season of raiding and he's hungry. You have: pork, barley, kale, and ale.") She got a big round of applause when we toasted her.
Other people just cooked what they felt like. There was a nice team washing up in the really nice dishwashing room with commercial dishwasher. Clean-up was easy.
The best part of this event, for me, was that I did not have to go and do anything unless I felt like it. There was no "it's time for court, gotta go to the tourney, gotta go to a meeting, gotta listen to bardic, etc." And I took some spectacular classes from people who really knew what they were doing, including making Austrian strudel, making marzipan flowers, and making farm cheese.
The attendees all asked that we do this event again next year. I think that's going to happen. It was all good.
