Spark by
K.C. Stewart My rating:
3 of 5 stars I finished reading Spark by K C Stewart last night. It's the first part of the author's "Hailey Holloway" series, featuring main character, Hailey, who lives a quiet, boring life.
Hailey's humdrum life is upended when she comes across two dragons fighting. One is left to die, and Hailey approaches to comfort him. Her act of kindness has unintended consequences when the dragon's soul enters her body. Now Hailey has the disembodied voice of Dacea, an ancient dragon, in her head. She fears she may be going crazy, until the other dragon returns to finish the job. Hailey goes on the run with Dacea, or Dak, as she calls him, collecting an ancient goddess on the way. They end up at the home of Darby, a witch whom Dak claims they can trust. Darby thinks she can separate Dak's soul from Hailey, but it involves a dangerous ritual, and to perform it, they need the knife that Silas, Dak's enemy, used to kill him.
While Hailey initially would have done anything to get rid of Dak, now she fears she'll miss him when he's gone. For his part, Dak is aware that Hailey is his Mate, but he's afraid to let himself love her. He is anxious to reclaim his physical form, if only to continue the battle with Silas, and Hailey is the key.
The story was fun for the most part, but I also found it vexing. I enjoyed Hailey's character. Dak was a bit harder to get a read on, even though some of the narrative was from his perspective. Dialog between them was hilarious. The story was rife with minor editing errors, and the ending was very anticlimactic and lacked resolution.
Favorite lines:
♥ Apparently she wasn't good enough for the voice in her head. New mental health low, she mused.
♥ If Sam and Dean Winchester can do it so can you.
♥ The plan was set...It involved chopsticks, a staple gun, and a dog wearing an orange tutu.
♥ In her right pocket she had a brass kitchen knob and a Harry Potter magnet set.
♥ She decided that it was time for action, drastic measures, and pizza.
Least favorite line: No matter how many candles she blew out, 11:11s she caught, or eyelashes she blew off her finger, wishing wasn't getting her anywhere.
Basically, it was a cute paranormal romance, even if it wasn't very well written. Average score.
