Before going to Japan, I'm trying to learn enough about it to not show up and act like a total gaijin. So I've watched travel shows, gotten books (mostly out of date, as I hear Japanese culture moves very fast), and I'm now trying to find a Japanese pen-friend, who can, I hope, explain some of the questions I have that a book or TV show can't answer.
So I'm reading this book today called Japan:true stories of life on the road and I happened upon this very interesting passage.
"Osaka does not merely preserve old styles of entertainment, it constantly dreams up new ones. For example, Osaka premiered the "no panties coffee shops" with panty-less waitresses that later swept Japan. In other places, the boom remained limited to coffee shops, but in Osaka they now have "no panties okonomiyaki"(do-it-your-self pizza) and "no panties gyudon"(beef-and-rice bowls). The latest, I hear, is "breast-rub coffee", where a topless waitress, on delivering coffee to the table, rubs her customer's face in the way the name would suggest."
Strange yes, so strange that it borders on those tales that people tell about, "Wow I heard that in such-and-such, you can such-and-such such-and-such, and it's not even illegal." Sometimes these stories are just a myth, and sometimes they're only half true. Personally I'd just like to go to Japan and find out for myself. Maybe not this whole breast rubbing panty-less thing, but all the other crazy stories I've heard about Japan.
Well, maybe just a bit of the breast rubbing panty-less thing :P.
