Ficlet | As they kissed and it began to rain, the fear in Jacob’s thoughts drew the pack in closer, encircling the pair, preparing to pounce. This doesn’t concern you, he said silently to his brothers, leave us be, he commended as their natural alpha. And so the pack stopped among the trees near where they stood. Now close enough to be seen by the others, Jacob broke off the kiss. “What’s the matter,” Edward said, reaching to touch him. Jacob shrugged him off, turning away, “you should leave,” he said, “they can see us.” “Are you ashamed of us?” Edward said, remembering how hard Jacob had worked to keep his feelings secret during Edward’s trip to the reservation. “You know I’m not,” he said. “But right now nobody but us knows, if you stay here there’s no taking it back.” Jacob was clearly suffering from his words, his tears mixing with the rain, “they’ll know, they’re listening,” he said. “Let them listen, it doesn’t matter.” “Doesn’t it?” Jacob said, his speech stuttered, “you’re married, you have a daughter, do they not matter?” “Of course they do.” “Bella is my friend, for God’s sake Edward, she died for you.” Jacob went to leave, “please don’t,” Edward said, “I couldn’t bear it if you left.” “I have to, you need to get used to being without me.” Desperate. Not knowing what to do, how to show Jacob what he meant, Edward removed all his clothes, standing naked before Jacob, the rays of the setting sun refracting crystal beams of light off his skin, the pack watching from the trees, “there is no without you,” he said. “There is no choosing who you love, you would know this more than anyone. We are meant to be mortal enemies, and yet I love you more than any other creature. But this is all I have to offer, flesh without soul, me. I cannot live a lie, and I would sooner die than try. If you won’t have me, you’ll need to destroy me, it’s the humane action.” Looking in his eyes, which were like honey on toast, “well we can’t have that,” Jacob said, “come here,” taking Edward by the waist and pulling him in close. “Let’s go inside,” Jacob whispered in his ear. They didn’t make love that night, they held each other. The hot and cold of their bodies equalised when they embraced. Jacob stayed awake until morning, then, as the sun’s rays began reflecting off Edward’s skin, he feel asleep in his arms. Holding Jake against his naked skin, Edward kissed his neck and said, “dream of us, my love,” the pack still outside, unable to break Jacob’s order for them to keep their distance.

Notes | Here Jacob expresses his guilt over the pain he and Edward being together would cause Bella. It’s certainly a turning point in the series as they both commit to each other, and to no longer hiding their love from those around them. Their not having sex was important too, their intimacy and love for each other transcends a need for penetration, which is a while off yet although just like in the canon, is something that will happen.
