Wrestling Thoughts (July 13-19 2009)

* The match between Sarita and Alissa Flash on Impact this week was the best women's match I've seen in a long time. Neither is an amateur of any kind and they put on a very good show.

* Watching the Bret Hart DVD this weekend, it occurred to me that the MVP/Jack Swagger match from Monday would have been helped with a 10-15 time limit. Time limits were once wonderful tools to showcase wrestlers and keep a feud going without the need to have either one win right away. Imagine if that match went to the time limit and then Swagger attacked MVP -- it ramps up the heat between them, but neither has won yet. Perfect.

* The more I think about it, the more that Christian seems like the perfect guy to replace Edge as Jericho's partner. But, I would keep him officially on ECW as a means of showing how the unified tag belts can be defended on any show. Smackdown and ECW taping together makes that easier. As for why Christian: he's a face, but not a pure face, he'll cheat, etc. He has a history with both Edge and Jericho, and is one of the few guys who we would buy as being 'better' than Edge in Jericho's mind. It would also make Edge coming back as a face that much easier since it would make the animosity/sense of betrayal greater.

* John Morrison as a world champ doesn't seem that far off. Weird.

* During the comedy Chavo/Hornswaggle match on Raw, Lawler and Cole demonstrated why they're so awful these days: they didn't treat it as a comedy match! Whenever Chavo took to the offence, instead of playing up the mock anger, they spoke in the hushed tones they usually reserve for the savage beatings Randy Orton and Legacy dole out. Or, they sounded bored. Lawler in particular just sounds bored/tired these days.

* I think Cryme Tyme needs to watch old Hart Foundation matches to see how they could improve their in-ring dynamic with a bigger guy and a smaller guy that's a better wrestler. Of course, it would be weird if they did that NOW when they're feuding with the Hart Dynasty, but, christ, how did they miss that?

* Actually, one thing that Jim Ross is 100% right about every single time he says it on his blog is that the DVDs the WWE puts out are a godsend for young wrestlers and should be studied at great length.

* I really wish the WWE would put out 3-disc "best of the year" DVD sets. Open it up to online voting where the fans vote on the best superstar/wrestler, best feud, and five best matches, and devote one disc to each. The best wrestler disc has his best matches, talking segments, etc. The best feud disc has EVERYTHING from that feud. The best matches (more than five, of course, just limit each fan to picking the top five) would span PPVs and TV shows and include stuff not included on the other two discs. In particular, I'd like to see them include the best on mic segments of the year since those tend to get ignored on DVDs -- and they play a BIG role in the business. I know I would buy such a set since it spans a lot of territory and material. And leaving it up to the fans precludes any sense of the company pushing anyone in particular.

Ah, that's all this week.
