Riku admitted it only to himself, but he sometimes found it a little hard to relate to kids his own age. Perhaps it came from the way he'd grown up quickly due to all the abrupt changes he had had in his short life, or perhaps it came from growing up helping clear tables at Omoro, the restaurant his dad owned

There's a girl! She's a touch older than Riku, but not by much, and is blissfully unaware of his presence. She's gathering daisies, only a few, and soon, she'll be sitting in the grass.

She's playing with the daisies.

"He loves me, he loves me not, he loves me, he loves me not..."

[chevalier_boy]

He glances up, watching her. She's pretty and blonde, like a younger version of Mao, only sweeter-looking and nowhere as snooty (though Mao's snootiness was really a cover for how gentle and kind her heart was). He smiles to her, shyly and says, "...hi there."

[sophie_darling]

"Hi!" She waves a little, and points at the bouquet she's preparing. "Do you want to pick flowers with me?"

[chevalier_boy]

Most boys at Riku's age would call flower-picking "too girly", but he's not like most boys. "Sure thing," he says, getting up. "I'm Riku."

[sophie_darling]

She grins, and offers him spontaneously a large purple flower. "I'm Sophie. I've never seen you before."

[chevalier_boy]

"Oh, I haven't been here very long," he says, accepting the flower and looking at it. "Thanks: this is pretty." He feels his cheeks grow warm, just a little...

[sophie_darling]

She grins. "You're welcome. Do you like flowers?"

[chevalier_boy]

"I guess," he says, his pale face turning a little pink. "They're pretty, but I don't really know a whole lot about them. Are you a gardener or do you just like flowers."

[sophie_darling]

She shrugs. "I just like them. It's a bit boring out here, sometimes, so picking flowers is something to do..."

[chevalier_boy]

"It can be a little dull here, but I keep busy," he says. "I've been reading a lot of books and I've been walking in the woods, but it gets a little lonely walking out there."

[sophie_darling]

Sophie nods. "I know," she replies. "I've felt that way too. What books do you like to read?"

[chevalier_boy]

"Oh, lots of different ones: sometimes I'll read something about science or nature, but I also like to read adventure stories and fantasy," he says. "I'd like to be a knight or a warrior and protect people when I get a little stronger."

[sophie_darling]

"Oh, a knight," she replies, eyes wide. "I knew a knight, when I was little. He was strange, but very kind."

Until he went completely crazy.

[chevalier_boy]

"Well, I hope I'll be a kind one: there's a lot of people in trouble in the world, and a lot of people getting hurt, but I'd like to help protect them, however I can," he says. "Not that I'd want anything to happen to you, but I hope if something does happen, that I can protect you or rescue you." He blushes as he admits this. "I mean.... every knight has a princess or a fair lady to protect or fight for. Maybe you can be my fair lady."

[sophie_darling]

Dlfkjdlfkdj Sophie blushes bright. "--- really?" Aaaaaw, he's so sweet! And very cute, too.

[chevalier_boy]

"Really," he says. "You see, I'm a little different from most people. I'm a lot stronger than I look, and I heal really fast. I'm not exactly magical, but I'm pretty close to it, so I wanna use that strength to help protect people." He describes all this with a matter of fact modesty.
