The Recapture of Buda Castle in 1686 Gyula Benczúr, 1896 Despite Grand Vizier Suleyman Pasha’s effort to send reinforcement, the besieged Ottoman army commander, Abdurrahman Abdi Arnavut Pasha was unable to mount a counter-attack and later killed in battle. The victorious armies of Holy Roman Empire and Kingdom of Hungary took their fury to the people, killing more than 3000 Turks, slaying muslims, raping women, burning mosques and synagogues. Jews weren’t spared either. Tony Jacques in Dictionary of Battles and Sieges named Abdi Pasha’s defensive effort under the siege heroic.

Laura Pisani (1525). Gabriele Cappellini, aka Calzolaretto (Italian, active c.1520). Oil on canvas. The authorship of this striking and impressive portrait has long puzzled scholars of Italian art, as has the identity of the beautiful young woman who is depicted. She appears to be a member of the large and powerful Pisani family and possibly a poet, given the way she is here depicted.
