one of the long time residents of our little cul-de-sac sold their home...so, new people will be moving in soon. a young family. so there have been a batallion of carpenters, painters, landscapers in preparation of and arrival of the new residents...today, an army of heavy earth moving equipment descended upon our little street, whereupon they started their own variation on a scorched earth policy. the skyscraper size crane, with its stabilizers straining under its own weight, trees older than our nation were cut down and lifted like toothpicks and dropped on the front lawn. one tree in particular, must have been three feet in diameter...an elm, i think...it didn't looked diseased...it looked vital and healthy...why? why would someone cut down such a wonderful livings species? steve brought this all to my attention. he was riveted by the scene of destruction...the crane precariously holding the behemoth size trunk above the vacant house. it was like watching a train wreck, but deeper and more of an impact. it saddens me.
