I drank what?

This evening I was a visitor to the Caroline town board meeting. You see, they're building a new town office building (next to the current town office/courthouse). They want to put in an actual phone system instead of having separate lines for each office. (Right now if you call the clerk but need to talk to the supervisor, you have to hang up and call the supervisor. They can't transfer the call.)

I colleague of mine is on the town board, and he knew I was doing this new-fangled phone stuff, so he asked me to take a look at what they're doing and give my opinion.

I did that, and also gave a loosely-sketched quote of what I thought an asterisk-based phone system would cost. And expressed willingness to install it (for a fee) and support it for them.

On the one hand, my price was vastly cheaper than the local vendor who does this for a living, and quoted a proprietary IP-based phone system. On the other hand, I don't have 18 techs on call 24x7, or 35 years experience.

I don't know which way they'll go, but it was an interesting experience either way.
