TheFridayFive (5/27) | Memorial Holiday Weekend

May 27, 2011 23:31

Here is the Q&A list from today's thefridayfive.

1. What is your favorite condiment?

Thousand Island. I like to put this in my sandwiches instead of mayo, which I have to talk myself into eating sometimes. Thousand Island is also a great dipping sauce for vegetables and meat. I also love mustard (hot, spicy, honey, stone-ground, etc.) in sandwiches and as a dipping sauce.

2. What is your favorite spice?

Freshly ground black pepper and garlic powder. I chose pepper because I tend to add it to almost everything I make and garlic powder because it adds great dimension to many savory dishes.

3. What is your favorite cooking oil? (Canola oil, sesame oil, butter, etc)

Olive oil! Not only does it add wonderful flavor to dishes, but I love using it as a dipping sauce for bread and as a base for salad dressings. It's very versatile. I also love the various flavored olive oils at Williams-Sonoma for bread dips.

4. What is your favorite starchy food? (Bread, rice, potatoes, noodles, etc)

Potatoes. There are so many things to make with potatoes, but one of my favorite comfort foods is garlic mashed potatoes. Om nom nom!

5. What is your favorite flavor for candy?

Favorite flavors mixed with chocolate: caramel, orange, peanut butter.
Favorite hard candy flavors: mint, cinnamon, berry flavors.
Favorite candy: See's apple pie truffles and key lime truffles, Kit Kat, Lindt chocolate truffles (all the varieties), chocolate oranges (whack and unwrap), and Twix.
Holiday Weekend

*sighs gustily* I was so excited yesterday when I finished all my work projects for the week and learned that I could have Friday off. With Memorial Day on Monday, hello four-day weekend! Sadly, it got off to a very rocky start this morning. I slept late, expecting to lounge in bed and wake up at my leisure since I had no morning commitments. At 5:30am, this highly annoying, piercing noise poked through the layers of sleep and had me staring muzzily at my alarm clock. It didn't sound like the usual alarm noise, but I was so befuddled I couldn't think about what else it could be. Finally looked out the window. The noise came from a huge truck that made a wrong turn into my cul-de-sac's shared, long, narrow driveway. The driver was having an extremely hard time backing up and it took about fifteen minutes for him to exit. OMG, that piercing noise occurred every single time the driver put the truck in reverse. *primal scream* I know it's a safety feature that alerts people to the movement of the truck, but at that moment, the sharp beep, beep, beep felt like it was poking my brain.

Then came the phone calls starting at 6:30am. First one was from my dad who didn't know I had Friday off. That call didn't bother me at all since it was family. He needed the new phone number of one my aunts, and upon learning that I had the day off, he told me he'd bring lunch to my house around noon. :) Thanks, Dad! Second and third calls were telemarketer recordings. WTH? My number is on the Do Not Call list. I think telemarketers use recordings as a loophole. By the time the fourth and fifth calls made their presence known, I got tired of answering the phone and let them go to voicemail. The ringing still woke me from my light dozes though. I never really went back to "sleep" after the truck driver's mistake.

For those of you who have Monday off, I hope you have an amazing holiday weekend! My parents are hosting a barbecue on Sunday for friends and family at their house. I'm in charge of the entertainment and helping with side dishes.

*hugs you* I hope all of you have a great weekend!
