Mother's Day Weekend Recap

May 14, 2010 23:12

*breathes* Now that I have a few moments to myself, I can relax and catch up with my journal writing. Since I got home from my Mother's Day trip to Tahoe, it seems like I've been running around nonstop. My whole week was a little off-pace because I was suppose to come home on Sunday. The hotel informed me that they were giving me a free extra day, so we decided to drive home on Monday.

And what a drive home that was...SNOW in the Sierras with no one allowed on the mountain highway unless their vehicle was equipped with 4WD or chains. *sigh* And what followed was one of my more challenging weather-related driving experiences. It included four unexpected stops-one for the torrential rain that made it impossible to see, another for the thick fog that also made it impossible to see, yet another to have the chains attached, and the last to have the chains removed. I was quite frustrated with people who didn't have the sense to turn on their headlights and the speed demons who thought driving more than 50mph in snowy, foggy conditions was a good idea. It took about six hours to get home. My mom had to work that night and it was a good thing that she was able to sleep in the car.

Friday to Monday Activities

Despite all the weather-related trouble going home, it was a gorgeous and sunny weekend for the most part, but it was extremely cold. We arrived at our hotel early Friday (May 7) afternoon. After unpacking and unwinding after a long drive, we went out and walked around the town for a bit. We had dinner at a fondue restaurant called the Melting Pot. Comfort food-so yummy and satisfying.

Saturday was filled with our mother/daughter spa treatments. I scheduled our massage appointments right when they opened in the morning so that we could have the rest of the afternoon off to do other things. The hot stone massage was so relaxing that I simply didn't want to move afterwards. I got my mom had three treatments (facial, body scrub, and massage) and I spent the time waiting for her by working out at the gym and sitting in the whirlpool and later the sauna.

The afternoon was spent shopping. I picked up a few books at Borders and a hoodie from Macy's. After a light snack, we headed back for the hotel on the bus. Unfortunately there was a really rude teenage boy on the bus who was egged on by his friend and just couldn't seem to STFU. His harassing nonstop commentary was absolutely obnoxious and despite complaints, the driver couldn't/wouldn't do anything about it. Between his convo with his friend and his comments, I learned quite a bit about this jerk. His name is Charlie W______ (last name omitted) who has been in trouble with the law. His friend was caught stealing energy drinks and Charlie supposedly told the cops it was the friend to save himself. Both complained bitterly about the unfairness of it all and about being in handcuffs.

Some stellar examples of Charlie's boorishness:

• Two teenage girls were forced to move from their seat in the front to the back close to where Charlie was sitting. He kept asking them to go out with him and when they refused, he asked why. I couldn't really hear what they said, but suddenly Charlie asks one of the girls if she likes to f*** her boyfriend and whether she likes it from behind or in front. O_o

• He kept complaining how everyone was out to get him and how stupid all his teachers were.

• He talked like Donald Duck for the last five minutes of the trip.

I couldn't get off that bus fast enough.

Later that night, Mom and I attended a show called Shake, Rattle, and Roll. It was a fun, high-energy tribute to music from the 1950s. We were in the third row and right up close to all the action. I loved the fluffy, colorful costumes and the singing and dancing. The 50s was way before my time, but classics never go out of style and I was even familiar with many of the songs. After the show, we met up with Dad for a late dinner.

Sunday was Mother's Day and I took my parents to our hotel's special Mother's Day brunch. It was a veritable feast filled with king crab, jumbo prawns, steak, scrambled eggs, salad, and a dessert trio. The main part of the meal was a sit down service, but the buffet had all the seafood and salad. There were also Mimosas and Bloody Marys for those so inclined. It was an elegant affair beautifully dressed with roses and orchids, but poorly planned. The buffet was circular, so no one knew where the lines began or ended. It caused much chaos and confusion with everyone scrambling to get their seafood.

Later, I gave Mom her wrapped present (Burberry scarf, make up, and a Nights in Rodanthe DVD) and we spent the afternoon watching DVDs and later walking around in the park and taking pictures. Mom thoroughly enjoyed her weekend and that was the whole point.

On Monday, we had a quick breakfast and left as early as we could. I am so glad we had the extra day, despite having to rush a bit. The snow and the chains were quite unexpected; we would have encountered the same thing had we left on Sunday, so I didn't feel bad about the weather. I'm just glad we arrived safely.
