2014 garden, week 22

Aug 11, 2014 21:30

Not much has changed for week 22.  I have a new visitor (see 4th picture) but not much else is different.

The chives are shooting out flower stems.  I guess it is time to harvest a lot of them.  I think I will have to freecycle some of the sage and basil.  They are just getting too big.  The parsley is at the end of its life.  However, a little caterpillar has decided that it is still tasty.  It has all gone to flower so I don't mind.  After some research, I have discovered that it is a black swallowtail butterfly caterpillar.  It will go to chrysalis over the winter and emerge as a beautiful black and yellow butterfly.

There are actually tomatoes on the bushes.  I docked them about a foot to keep them under control and they seem to be doing fine.  There are maybe a dozen small tomato fruits between the 2 plants.  Not as productive as earlier in the summer but the 100F temps have hit so it may take a while for them to turn.  The carrots are doing well.  I have picked a few.  They are thick but not super long.  I'm giving them more time.  I'll harvest them all by the end of October.

The beans are still there.  They have even sent out shoots.  Like the tomatoes, there aren't as many beans but there are still a bunch.  Plus, I have harvested a bunch of seeds for next year.

That is it for now.  School starts on the 25th and we need to cram in some more fun stuff before it is done.
