It's official. I'm an Oberlin College alumna.
It's pretty much how I thought it would be: boring, involving me missing everyone back at Oberlin, anxiety over immediate life plans, trying to find people to hang out with.
I have been entirely unmotivated to unpack and move back into my room for these two reasons: 1) I'm still in denial that I'm not going to be packing everything again to go back to Oberlin in September. 2) My room looks awful. It is the product of three people temporarily living here over the past four years. Two walls are partially painted yellow, while everything else is blue. The wallpaper border incompletely lines the tops of the walls. My brother and my extended relative left random objects, such as a green crate and an XBox, neither of which I know how to dispose of.
Since returning to my parents' house late Monday night, I've been moping around, wanting to go back. Oberlin is where I made some of my very best friends, where I really began the process of learning who I am and what I need to do, where I was just comfortable. I don't think I can say that about many places in the world. My house with Andrew, Brendan, Daniel, Niels, and everyone who came by. Blue House with David, Rob, Kevin, Joel, Doug, Elijah. ELC with Reivin, Thomas, Oheneba, Ted. All those other folks who were there in the bad and good times. How could have I made it through this year without their support?
But graduation really brought me around full circle. I was once that freshman who stuck around to cheer on my friends as they received their diplomas and to give them their senior gifts. Monday, I got to wear the AAA gown, and to begin a new legacy: the FASA shoulder drape.
Unbelievable. I knew I was going to smile the whole time, and that's exactly what I did.
