My mother is just so...evolved. She's a person who operates on a higher chakra-level. I'm so rooted at the, well, root level that I can't really see more than glimpses of meaningful things ( Read more... )

Nothing in life is all-or-nothing, black-or-white. It's all completely and entirely relative, and to be or think or live on either end of ANY spectrum is to live without our eyes and to live only part of life.

Anyway, there are many versions of the Bible, and "dominion" is most definitely a word I have seen in Genesis. Also, I'm fairly confident that I could cite many places where it's said that we can do what we will with animals, but of course God doesn't just sit by and enjoy animal abuse. It's mentioned that people can take many animals and burn them as a sacrifice out of joy or gratitude, but when someone in the Bible held one of these burn-fests in celebration of his own victories, ...big unhappy from God.

Anyway, done with that. Citing things from the Bible vaguely and arguing about them never got me anywhere happy.

Can you blame the woman? I'm sure she lived on insulin most of her life due to Type I diabetes. When she found out it has been tested on animals, should she just sacrifice her life? That would be the one end of the spectrum. All I'm saying about animal testing is that it's often pretty useless. Then again, I'm an advocate of testing things on prisoners on death row, which is highly highly controversial. It makes me unpopular. But all people with novel/dangerous ideas tend to be unpopular. Whatever.

Well, not *anything* with animals. There were pretty strict rules against sex with them. Not in Genesis, no, but somewhere in the Pentateuch (spelling?).

You really need to see Penn and Tellers "Bullshit" episode on PETA. At one time they say "I would personally strangle every chimp on Earth to save the life of one strung out crack head." And frankly, it's an extreme case, but it makes a point. Right now look at where you are and the friends you have and the professors who fill your head. Would you really let humans die for the sake of getting rid of animal testing? You are a vegetarian right, so am I wrong for eating meat? Is that also animal cruelty? Would you stop tigers from eating zebras? It's college, you are right on track for how you are supposed to be thinking right now. No offense.

I'm not in a position where I'm sacrificing any human's life for an animal's.

What animals do to other animals is their business. They don't have the same capacities as we do for alternative behaviours (i.e., vegetarianism). There's no other way for them, but there is for us. Simply stated.

And why on earth would anyone save a "strung-out crackhead" and sacrifice all the chimps? Not only would the eco-system be utterly fucked over, but also there WOULD BE NO CHIMPS TO TEST COSMETICS AND MEDICINES ON! Tyler, did I once say that I think animals should never be used for testing? It could be interpretted as that, but I never stated such and I don't feel that way. And when you argue, you choose to ignore choice bits of the other person's statements to suit you.

Factory farming is cruelty. When you buy meat from this sort of system we have in America, yes, you are cruel to animals. End of story.
