Is it summer yet?
I suck hard at updating this stuff. Probably has something to do with the fact that I've been doing most of my updating on myspace, but I'm not really all that good at updating that thing either. Whatever.
The anti-abortion militia is on campus this week. They have a charming and tasteful fucking disgusting display consisting of photos of aborted embryos/fetuses and comparing them to photos of the Holocaust. They have large banners claiming that abortion is genocide. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't genocide the mass killing of a racial or ethnic group with the intention to eliminate said group? So, wouldn't that make abortion, by definition, not genocide? I'm not in any way saying that everyone should go out and get abortions and that abortion is a suitable substitute for birth control (if for no other reason, it just wouldn't be cost effective!). However, legislation against abortion is a bad idea for multiple reasons. First off, what about the women who are victims of rape or incest? And those who want to include exceptions for those cases, what happens when a 15 year old girl who is scared out of her mind decides to call rape instead of completing the pregnancy? Then you have an abortion AND a young man whose life is possibly irreparably fucked up. When abortions were illegal, it didn't mean that they weren't being done. It meant that they weren't regulated, and were often done without proper medical equipment and sterilization procedures, resulting in injury and infection to the woman, sometimes leading to death. No good.
The thing that bothers me about these people is that I don't think that they have really taken any time to think about the points of view other than the ones fed to them. They have taken a sensationalist idea with disturbing photographs and run with it, imagining that by showing graphic photos to the passers-by, they are starting a revolution. The only revolution I have seen is the amount of people disgusted and turned away by the tasteless tactics employed by this organization.
