Hairdressing, though stressful, fast paced, and full of bumps, is very rewarding at times. I did a partial highlight on an 11 year old the other day and she was sooooo happy. She loked so cute. Today the owner of my salon said, " My friend Linda loves her daughter's highlights. They are both very pleased." I didn't know she was a friend of the owner's, so it was double ego boost on my skills.
Also, one of my regulars came in today, I put her to sleep in the shampoo bowl and gave her a haircut that made her feel like a totally new person. Another girl's eyebrows got botched a bit, but she still bought product from me and tipped me $7.00 on her haircut. She'll probably come back. 90% personality, 10% skill... that's what goes into hairdressing.
So what it comes down to is, I get to do creative things for people. Things that make them feel good. A salon visit can make or break a person's whole day, so I have ne chance to make a positive impression. When done correctly, I get to connect with complete strangers on many levels. New clients become new friends. It's an amazing feeling to make someone else feel good about how they look because when they look good, they feel good. Hairdressers have that power, and really, that's what it's all about: making people feel good.
And that's why I love my job.
