The Ride To Conquer Cancer 2010

Jun 17, 2009 08:14

So I missed out on this year's Ride to Conquer Cancer, which happened on June 13th and 14th, but I've been over that for a while. I want to thank everyone who donated money and gave me their emotional support as I tried and ultimately came short of my personal expectations.

It was a tough season to raise money for charity, but in spite of the setbacks of a failing economy, 3,530 cyclists managed to raise $14.5 million for cancer research at the Princess Margaret Hospital, and biked the 200 km from Toronto to Niagara Falls over two days. I know the route is a challenging one, and although I missed out riding this year, I plan to make next year the ride to remember. There is a new route that I've opted to ride on June 12-13, the M200 Classic Double-Century, a 200 mile (that's 320+ km for us metric-privy folk) route that shares the start and finish line of the 200 km ride, but is extended and more challenging. I've already registered for next year, pledging to raise $3,500, and set the fundraising train rolling with my own donation, $250 paid in monthly installments over the next 12 months, and I hope that you can help me beat my goal.

Over the past two years the Ride To Conquer Cancer has gone on to raise $28.5 million, an unheard of amount for any charity fundraiser, and that money has already allowed advances to be made. This year PMH implemented a new digital x-ray for mammography, allowing faster results, earlier detection, and less exposure to harmful radiation. Think of the number of women whose lives will be saved by this technology alone. It's a big step that was made possible by the Ride and it's older sister event, the Weekend to End Breast Cancer. Other firsts in cancer research can be found HERE. It's these advancements that give me hope and make me feel that what I'm doing is necessary and is making a difference in our world. Cancer runs in my family, and if I haven't done my part now to ensure that we can beat cancer, then how will I ever look my children in the face and be able to say they'll be okay?

So, I'm asking for your help. Click the banner below to link to my personal page where you can either donate online or print out a form and send in with a cheque. No amount is too little as each and every dollar counts. Keep in mind that if you'd like to donate more, but you don't have the funds all at once, you can make your payments over time. A $250 donation spread over 12 months amounts to $20/month, so please consider that as an option. And if you know someone else that you think would like to donate, don't hesitate to forward the link. With your support, I truly believe we can beat cancer in our lifetime.
