I'm not sure if your hair is long enough (just past the shoulder seems to be the minimum), though it's worth a shot.

(1) Pull your hair into a ponytail and twist it into a rope. (no hair elastics or anything)
(2) Wrap it around itself like a bun; your hair has to go around itself once for this to work well.
(3) Flatten the bun against your head (works better if your hair is wrapped loosely instead of super-tight). Hold it here with one hand - I use my non-dominant hand.
(4) Stick the pen or pencil through your hair on one side (same side as hand holding the pencil) like you're stabbing yourself in the skull, and go until the point touches your scalp. You only need to catch about 1/3-1/2 of the hair-rope to the outside of the pencil.
(5) Lever the pencil so it's running parallel to your head while pushing the point under the bun; don't let any hair loose. You'll probably be drawing an ink line on your scalp if you're using a Bic pen. The line will be parallel to your shirt collar and run most of the width of the bun.
(6) Use the hand holding the bun to make sure the stray ends are "inside" the bun - in the picture, the end of my ponytail is poking straight up from near the center of the underside of the bun. Shove down the hair-rope directly opposite from where the pencil came in so that it's as close to the scalp as possible.
(7) Lever the pencil up again so that it catches part of the hair-rope on the far side of where it went in. Jostle it around so that there aren't any hairs being pulled too tight or getting stuck.
(8) Whoohoo! You have a convenient writing instrument AND a sexy updo that can be undone in seconds!

The girl who taught me how to do this had hair just past her shoulders, and while it worked it ended up looking super-messy and punk. Mine looks much more school-marm due to the fact that my hair is halfway down my back and so makes a bigger bun with fewer ends.

For the win!
(I had forgotten that Reuben has even longer hair than I have ever had in like my entire life.)
