I noticed a small blurry thing going on with my right eye last month. I knew it wasn't a hole, and was confident it wasn't a detached retina, but the eye simply seemed to be out of phase with with the left one. Since I have learned that one doesn't delay these kinds of things, I called my primary eye surgeon who got me in right away (They watch me pretty closely. I see one of them every 3-6 months). I knew there was a significant chance of the cataract in the right eye going into hyperdrive, and figured, wahoo!
First exam, and that wasn't the case. Puzzling, and nothing else going on that he could see, so he sent me to my other surgeon to get his opinion. He runs his tests, turning up zippo, then has his tech check my vision. Normally, you might have a small fluctuation in your diopter, maybe a as much as .25 either way every couple years. Mine had gone from -14.25 to -16.50. In nine months. Basically, my eye was being stretched like silly putty. Surgeon #2 talks to surgeon #1, and they agree they need to do the lens implant post haste before my eye gets impossible to fit.
Not unexpected, certainly not planned. Personally, I don't think anyone should have two eye surgeons, nor be on a first name basis with an anesthesiologist who has one's drug allergies memorized, but at least now the right eye matches the left. Lens implants are an amazing technology, and I am without words to describe what it feels like to open my eyes in the morning and see my alarm clock - hell, to see the table the clock sits on! I'm having a slight reaction to the steroid drops (I am doing a great imitation of a yorkie on triple shot expressos), but otherwise all is well.
Of course, I used the vision thing as justification to buy a new computer, and I must say that the 24" iMac is even more beautiful in person. Also, a new iPod - right, like I could stop myself from getting the iPod with Apple dangling a $150 rebate in front of me.
All I can say is this had better be the last one. I am tired of drops, patches, being the youngest person in the waiting room (I have a researcher at work who says I'm the perfect subject since I have old eyes and a young heart). I don't want to be about the eyes any more.
Wah wah wah... Like I shouldn't be praising the goddess that I have a great benefit package that covered nearly every dime of all four surgeries. I seriously need a reality check!
