Beijing Day 5 - Day 5 - Forbidden City, Chien Men, Wang Fu Jing

Jun 14, 2011 23:55

we bought some sandwichs from the bakery cause there might not be food at the Forbidden City
or they might be but being very expensive, also i went to get breakfast

huge piece of bacon , cheese, lots of vege underneath it, i love the bread !

the entrance to the forbidden city takes forever ! it's such a huge place....
at least there were plenty of shops around to entertain us before we reached
this guy demonstrates his hat..

very quickly within 2 second he switches it into 2 styles

a lot of people bought it, it isnt expensive too =)

i bought a sunglasses because it looked so cool !!!
also because it's only RM 10, and it's so bright i couldnt really open my eyes for the past half an hour
and SJ needs a glasses.. so many reasons to get it haha...

see why i say they look cool ?

looks like cyclops... and also i think it looks like alien, fr alien vs predator
ok maybe not but i find some similarity...

so we're here !
*The Forbidden City ! *
it was the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty.

first tall wall so that intruders may not come in easily..
it's also the entrance to the great forbidden city

over the walls straight ahead is that you see there.. but we're making a left turn first
bought a map for RM 1 and it guides you on the route on how to complete the whole temple
the temple is so so huge

"Built in 1406 to 1420, the complex consists of 980 buildings
with 8,707 bays of rooms and covers 720,000 m2 (7,800,000 sq ft). "

entering to the left..
a huge huge door with loads of gold knobs

lesser people at this area, so there was no one to harrass the doors
on other doors....... you couldnt even go near it

marching army that guards this place

walked into a little art gallery...

they display artworks from the dynasty times

i only took this much as it was in a dark room and actually, photos are forbidden

*female guardian lion*

i'll let the photos speak for themself

so far to walk =S

"Dragon heads are used as water spouts as in Chinese mythology Paxia, the sixth of the dragon's nine sons, loves water. "

The male lion has a ball under its paw, representing the imperial power.

entered the souvinor shop

and continued with the the other palace place

the bed of love

room after a marraige

we finally entered into the Imperial Garden

The Imperial Garden is where members of the imperial household came to relax. Alabyrinthh of old trees, pavilionss and flowers the footpaths are paved with mosaic patterns made from small stones. At the Mid-Autumn Festival (the 15th day of the eighth lunar month) the emperor and empress came to the garden to view the full moon.

monkey guardian

haha.. they have quite a number of interesting trees here

lovely pond with a whole school of nice orange kois

gallery of the emperor's clothings

back into the garden...

spotted another shop so we went inside
SJ got me lays potato chips hehe.. i think he knows me well enough...
the way thru my heart is thru the stomach =P

we sat down by the window with this view, munched on the left over of our bread
and saw an interesting dish beside us..
alot of people order what you call.. a hot heating rice box
we looked for a while and waited to see what was under the box..
it loooked gooooddd ! so we got a box ourself

for RM 10, i think it's okay for a hot spot like this ?
even lays was just RM3
what you do is that you cut a little bag under the rice box,
cut it and a chemical mix happens
quickly close the rice box as the whole thing heats up..
see the steam.....

after 8 minutes... wala !
it's the first time we see such thing, thought it was interesting indeed..
wanted to bring it home but we did not...
afraid that the custom might stop us with the chemical mix in the rice box

we continued our journey

another air cond gallery we love
haha it's aircond places like this that makes it not too suffering to wonder around

paintings

emperor's bed room

i didnt notice the cute animals until then !
"Animal ornaments commonly decorate the corners of roofs. The more animals the more important the building."

we got ice-cream.. SJ feeds the geisha

this is the wedding gallery

ceremony when a wedding is held

people enters the palace with gifts

wedding wears

we were a little tired and decided not to finish the right side of the palace as it would be quite the same
well maybe not but it's so huge and we thought.. is alright, we can forgo it

since the exit was far over the other end, we walked back thru the entrance,
(exit so far away and have to walk around the palace to get to the subway.. no way !!!)

stolen overall view of the place from http://www.tours.bj.cn/ below :

top view of the whole place..
so tiring to walk the whole place ! we walked like an S shape so we covered left till the end
and middle till the end
and we did right hand sided a little and we gave up

we left for Chien Men
we didnt finish the right hand side of the forbidden city cause it was too huge !
*see image taken fr other website to see how HUGE the place is !*

some quotes describing the items were taken from *here*

although it was a walking distance (about 3 times from the beginning of forbidden city till the end)
we decided to take the subway, our feets were crying, from earlier...
and this was the first thing we saw outside the subway station

cyclops is back again

that's Chien Men

bought the same delicious ice-cream

we had some to quench our thirst
i spotted some clothes i liked from uniqo but they didnt have any of my size...
it was getting late, time to head to our next destination...

some restaurants outside the subway at the shopping mall.. felt like sitting down there =P

outside the shopping mall, displays of artworks

we're here at Wang Fu Jing... famous for their night market, filled with food and things to buy

but especially famous for exotic food such as FAT juicy worms...

starfish, scorpions...

they're all moving too ! wriggling their legs

famous fruits dip in sugar

hmm, nothing to buy... didnt wanna spend more money on junks

okay maybe we'll have one of these

tada

oh we also bought a corn but both of us took one bite and spat it out
i asked SJ if i could throw it away, he agreed without second thought
for a guy who eats everything.. even he couldnt swallow that one bite
it was gross, mushy and disgusting..

so funny cause when we told joanne later, she said the same thing happened to her
but she bought another one cause she thought the first one wasnt good..
we didnt even have any appetite for anything else after that

they blow the sugar into cute animal shapes.. very talented

some ancient well

more exotic snacks all along the road

smelly tofu........ really smelly !!!

so tempted to get one of these.. looks so refreshing with all it's pulp floating around

more sugar coated fruits.. really famous there

not really sure what these are, but my guess.. some internal organs

more smelly tofu

i think these dumpling looks nicer than ours..

this stall had huge spiders...
as i went closer to take a photo, the owner took the stick of spider and put it close to me
i ran way.. but he was only taking it closer so i could grab a photo
still... thanks but no thanks !!!  he seemed amused

lots of chicks.. look kinda sad

now this one looks cute

off to the main shopping road
this place is famous for it's expensive shopping center

wondered around for a little bit...
