While I don't watch TW, I have noticed a lot of Gwen!hate. Which is weird, because I really loved in "The Stolen Earth" when she said to Ianto, "I'm going to go down fighting. Like Owen and like Tosh." I thought that was cool. I mean, I prefered Tosh in the, like, four episodes I saw, but I didn't have a problem with Gwen. She's cute!
God, when I see Sara!hate, I feel myself get SO defensive. "HOW DARE A WOMAN GET UPSET OVER DOMESTIC ABUSE! GOD, WHAT A BITCH! SHE JUST WANTS TO GET IN GRISSOM'S PANTS! SHE'S SO SELFISH!" I remember watching "Sex, Lies and Larvae" in Chemistry (our teacher also taught Forensic Science, so we watched CSI when we had nothing better to do) and everyone was like, "OMFG, SHE'S SO CRAZY! WHY IS SHE FREAKING OUT?!" and I was like, "Guys, it's domestic abuse. It's a pretty big deal." Especially since Nick can get all upset over child abuse cases because he was abused as a kid... but Sara can't get upset over domestic/rape cases... even though she was a victim of it? Really, fandom, really?
I was totally taken surprise by the Gwen!hate, because I try to stay out of TW fandom and I lovelovelove Gwen. That was SUCH a great Gwen moment, I don't understand the hate for Gwen.
INORITE? Everyone else is allowed to have their issues, except for Sara? WTF? I mean, she's been through some tough shit. I wouldn't like her if she wasn't defensive and a wee bit nuts at times, because it would be totally unrealistic and a complete misrepresentation of anyone that has been through that. That's were my parallel with Gwen comes from... Seriously, she's been totally fucked up by her experiences, and if I were in her place (or Sara's) I totally would see myself having some of the same reactions. How can anyone hate on someone for being horrifically hurt and reacting to that? I guess I see a lot of myself in Gwen and Sara, so when I hear people hating on them I feel like I'm being attacked in a way, too.
Oh, I am so much like Sara that it's not even funny. So whenever I read stuff that's attacking her, I'm like, "bitch, step off." She's one of the most realistic TV characters ever and I really hate that fandom lets everyone else's stuff slide (lol, Warrick leaving Holly Gibbs at the scene and her dying because he was gambling? Cath accidentally blowing up the DNA lab and almost killing Greg in the process? Cath almost taking off her shirt for a suspect in season 7? Nick attacking a potential suspect on a hunch because of a child abuse case? Greg killing that kid? And that's just to name a few.) and Sara gets bitched about constantly for... what? Having a crush on Grissom? Getting upset over domestic abuse cases? Relating to victims? ::flails:: I DON'T UNDERSTAND!!!
I think that's part of why people get so defensive about the characters they love. I think that's why companion wars are so hard core in Doctor Who. When you see yourself in a character, it's hard to see someone else insulting them, because you really feel like you're being attacked.
(And yes, they ALL Have issues. That's part of the appeal for me! And tbh, I never got attached to Warrick, because of the Holly Gribbs thing. I was so angry at all of them for that, I can't even watch the first episodes. But I've always wondered, why with the shit Warrick pulls specifically, why Sara is the one everyone seems to hate. But it's the same with Torchwood. Yeah, Gwen's whiny and cheated on her boyfriend and gets bitchy. But Owen's an unfeeling wanker. Ianto got 2 people killed and almost the whole team for his girlfriend. Tosh feels sorry for herself too much. But they all have reasonings for what they have done, so why is it okay for everyone but Gwen?)
I honestly feel like Grissom is the only one that hasn't stretched my judgments. I and really don't get the Sara/Grissom hate. I think they have one of the most beautiful, painful, real relationships I've ever seen on TV. And I'd take Sara over Cath any day. But honestly? I think a lot of the hate for Sara and Gwen and characters like them that are hated lies in sexism. But that's a whole other argument.

PS Tosh was an acquired taste for me, I didn't really love her until the 2nd series (which I blame on the writer's because I don't think they gave her much to work with til then) but when I fell I fell hard. Tosh kicks serious arse, even through the stereotypical lonely computer geek!Asian crap series 1 tried to pull.
I'm pretty sure I picked Tosh as a favorite just because I could but in the few season one episodes I saw... she didn't do much and she was stuck with the failtastic Asian computer geek shit. Then I saw some of season 2 and she was in Gitmo and her's and Owen's death scenes and, God, she broke my heart. :(
Tosh's death scene was devastating. I cried for days.
Series 2 was great for her. If you haven't seen "Adam," it was oddly an ironic liberating episode for her. Even though the events aren't exactly bearing, it gave her a chance to be Tosh and not the failship of Asian stereotypes.
