I had the same problem, I didnt' want to buy a keyboard that had too much unnecessary shit on it because I didn't need it. The Yamaha s-80 is awesome because it does have the straight ahead voices but you also can tweak the synth voices and loops. It has all the advantages of a keyboard and a synth. It also feels very similar to a real piano in its touch and has 88 weighted keys. Only thing that sucks is that it's reallly huge and heavy so you'll more than likely need someone else to help you carry it around. for this reason a lot of people end up getting the yamaha s 30 since it's lighter and smaller.. easier to carry around (and costs less). it's basically the same thing as the s80 but it's not weighted keys and it has 61 keys instead of 88. so you have to really think about what you need. since you're an actual pianist and not someone who wants to be a keyboardist for the "cool sounds" you will prob want the s80 over the s30 ;)
I've had my s80 for four years now and hauling it back and forth from shows and practices and it hasn't died on me yet. *knocks on wood* I know from a friend of mine that worked at an instrument store that certain keyboards don't stand the test of time very well. He said alesis was one not to get because they constantly are getting people returning them but that yamahas were really good.
