There is something that puzzles me about salad dressing names.

Zesty Italian I understand.
Balsamic Vinegarette I understand.
Blue Cheest I understand.

But "Ranch" is a mystery. I acknowledge it. I accept it. Heck, I've even craved me some Hidden Valley at times. But I don't understand it. Why "ranch"?? Is it to say "I live in wide-open fields and am physically attracted to my second cousin therefore I enjoy creamy buttermilk dressing with who knows what floating around in it with a touch a (what I think is) black pepper to cover my home-grown veggies" or something like that? Who says city folk don't like random white processed dressing too?
