My favorite 9x9 Pyrex glass baking dish exploded tonight. I was sitting in the bedroom when I hear a "POP" and the sound of little hard bits of something raining down on the counter and kitchen floor. Glass as it turned out. No, no one was hurt. Kyle, thank God, was out of the line of fire at the time of the explosion. By the time I got to the kitchen there were shards of glass everywhere and a brownie briquette flaming merrily on the stove along with a piece of tinfoil and two pieces of junk mail which happened to have been sitting close enough to catch fire.We also lost a very nice knife which was, I think, sitting inside the pan of brownies. The handle pretty much melted and it will never be the same again.  I got the fire out just in time for the fire alarm to start beeping and informing us in a calm voice "warning. fire". We had a mostly eaten batch of brownies still sitting in the pan, covered in tin foil, sitting on the back burner of the stove and Kyle decided to accidentally turn that burner on instead of the front one he had intended to cook rice on. Poor Kyle. I think we got all of the glass off the floor and most of it off the stove (some fell underneath the heating coils and we can't quite reach it, but the glass won't harm anything there). Mostly, I'm just regretful that I have to replace my favorite baking dish. C'est la vie.
