I finally got around to popping in the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya DVD. I hadn't seen the series since I saw it fansubbed, and I hadn't heard any of the dub voices yet. I ended up watching episode 00, the student film episode.
Even if you're not a moe fan, or an anime fan, if you're a member of fandom, you will appreciate it. It's basically a spoof of moe anime and bad sci-fi movies, but it could be applied to almost any annoying, stupid, or bad part of fandom. A lot of this also reminded me of bad fan fiction and silly J-pop videos (how could Mikuru Beam NOT be a reference to Mari Yaguchi's Sexy Beam?). The whole series is a parody of nerd subculture, ans it's rather clever. I found the episode I was discussing on YouTube, and I'm posting all of the parts here for you to see!
Part One-the theme is subbed, but the rest is dubbed. Subs are hard to read on YouTube, so I found dub clips.

I really liked the dub voices! Kyon's wasn't perfect, but the way he was played was really good. I not sure if I liked the voice itself though. But the way Crispin Freeman did his voice made him sound like a very normal teenage boy, which is what Kyon should sound like. It felt very natural. I prefer Tomokazu Sugita's performance, but the dub was good as well.
Mikuru's voice sounded exactly like Yuko Goto's, which was good. It's hard to get that moe voice to sound right in English, but Stephanie Sheh did really well. Same with Yuki, only her voice isn't as hard to do. And I kept thinking "ICHIGOOO~" whenever Itsuki spoke..xD He did really well!
Now I get what many Haruhi fans mean when they say you have the watch the series multiple times to really get it. *SPOILERS FOR THE ENTITE SERIES* You see, the movie tells the story of the series, with Itsuki as Haruhi, Mikuru as Yuki, Yuki as Asahina, and Kyon as himself. I might diseclt this later, I don't know. But it'll probably be on my mind!*END SPOILERS*
