I should be asleep. I should also stop trying to get the last 15 Cardrins in Flyff. Pixels on a screen, pixels on a screen...why can't I seem to convince myself of this?!
Anyway.
Due South. So, there's discussion of dS crack and somehow X-Files is pulled into this and I'm flailing because...
...okay, no, this isn't as out there as you think...
...Ray and Benny really, really fit the Mulder/Scully model. No, seriously, it works.
First, what characterizes Mulder and Scully? Mulder is "The Believer". He is willing to look at the improbable for a resolution because he can't rely on the existing system. Yet, despite his belief in the improbable, he distrusts the government to the point of paranoia. And on top of that, he's a cynical, cynical man who just wants to do something right. Scully is "The Skeptic". She is clinical, logical, and the "brain" to Mulder's "heart". She also happens to be a stickler for rules and believe in working through the system. Sure, her character changes later, but we all know that's because Chris Carter was running out of ideas and let's not speak of the atrocity of S8&9.
Now, how do Ray and Benny fit into this? Well, I would argue that Ray is the "Mulder-esque" one. Ray is the unconventional one. He makes leaps of anti-logic. He suspects people based on a movie casting. He thinks the system is screwed up and doesn't hesitate on breaking the minor rules in favor of getting the big fish. All of this is Mulder behavior.
Benny, on the other hand, is resolute about following protocol and more "Scully-esque". He trusts the system implicitly and he doesn't make logical leaps. He's the one who serves to be the voice of reason (mostly) for the more hot-blooded Ray and is there to help restrain Ray's overly emotional behavior. Yet, at the same time, Benny will follow Ray's lead, much like Scully breaking all sorts of laws/protocols for Mulder without the guy asking, so much so that the man breaks the law (petty crime though it be) for Ray.
And we all know where Mulder and Scully ended up in the season finale (the only thing S9 got right).
Randomly, a dS AU following the plot of Detour (
XF 5x04) would be hilarious.
