Title: Sweetest Surprise
Pairing: Horikita Maki and Ikuta Toma
Rating: PG
Genre: fluff & romance
Summary: "I never knew love could be like this..."
A/N: Happy belated birthday Toma and Maki! It's so cute how their birthdays are next to each other ^-^. So obviously 'cause of that, I did a collab of them together. I get it, the fic will be pretty much corn & cheese, but hey in reality I can't see these two together like a couple but this is a little experiment to broaden my horizons in pairings other than my usual Sakuraiba slash. Yay my first Johnny Idol/Non-Johnny Idol fic! This fic was vaguely inspired by the song "Sweetest Surprise" by Michael Learns to Rock.
WARNING: Like the fic, it's a super corny song, so if it's not your type of genre, beware on listening to this while reading.
Anyway here's the story!
"Hello?" Maki greeted into the device as soon as she fished it out of her purse while jogging in heels to the train. "Yeah I'm on my way over right now." She giggled after awhile. "No I wasn't seeing someone just now. Alright I'll see you guys in a bit...and I really do hope you guys didn't pull off something big...Mhmm I'll see about that...See ya!"
She stood behind the yellow line at the train that will take her to Shibuya. The breeze of the incoming train ruffled the skirt of her light purple dress. She breathed in deeply as she clasped onto her handbag with both hands and boarded the train.
Today was her 23rd birthday. A few weeks ago, her friends were planning on throwing a big surprise party until she eventually found out after finding their hush-hush behavior too peculiar. Ever since then, she pleaded with them to keep it a simple and quiet event with close friends only. Heck, to her a quiet dinner and with a decent sized cake with just white frosting to share would have been already considered as a S class party.
She sighed quietly in vain as she thought of the phone conversation. 'Guess I have to wait to see what they've came up this time. But I swear I am not letting them get me drunk...not like last year...' She shook her head with a small smile on her lips as she reminisced until someone tapped on her from behind.
"HoriKitty-chan~!" A familiar voice floated over her shoulder. Maki's mouth dropped slightly before she turned to make sure she wasn't imagining things. As she suspected (and to her delight), there stood her former co-star Ikuta Toma, hanging onto the same support pole as her with his boyish grin on his face.
"Toma-kun!" Her face lit up as he enveloped her into a friendly hug. She blushed deeply since they were in public afterall and people could get the wrong impression; nevertheless it did not wipe the grin on her face.
"Happy Birthday!" The young man looked down in adoration as he greeted her.
"Thank you! How are you though? What are you doing-." That was when Maki remembered as she closed her eyes and cupped them with her hand slightly in embarrassment. "Ah that's right. It's your birthday tomorrow...I'm sorry, how can I forget?" She bowed her head apologetically. "Happy Birthday."
Toma laughed. "Well that hurts a little bit," he joked but tilted her head back. "But yeah, where are you celebrating tonight? Not that I really need to know since I wasn't invited and all..." He pretended to sulk.
Maki giggled as tapped him slightly on the shoulder to stop with the teasing. "Stop it. Actually my friends were the ones that are throwing me a surprise party tonight. That I ended up making them fess up because of how they were acting." She added quickly with another giggle as she saw the boy raise an eyebrow when he heard that she knew about this so-called surprise party.
"Still have that nosy character huh? Guess some things never change." The Johnny idol poked more fun at her, but he couldn't help it. He found it so cute how bashful she could easily be.
"I'm not nosy," Maki objected as she blushed. " I just have a keen sense with things that's all. Anyways, I really do hope the party isn't big...you know how I am."
"Well I don't see why not," Toma countered. "You deserve something special, even if you on the more reserved side. Best to live your life while you are young." Toma gave his approving nod.
"Thanks oji-san. I'll keep that in mind." She dodged slightly with a laugh as the young man attempted to strike at her playfully. "So how are you celebrating tonight?"
"Mm clubbing with some of my friends." Toma spotted two empty seats next to each other and motioned his friend over to them.
"Sounds like you," Maki agreed, nodding. They were silent for awhile, not knowing what to say. Funny how they used to be so close four years ago, now it seemed like so much has changed. Ever since their made their big break as actors, it had been hard to catch up. Both of them thought of the times they spend on and off set of their drama, playing video games, eating out with Shun, drawing random cartoons or silly scripts, exchanging manga...Was it really that hard to get back into the loop again?
"So...been seeing anyone?" Toma asked after what seemed like forever.
"Mm?" Maki shook out of her thoughts. "Oh! Ahm...not really. Just casual hangouts with guy friends here or there when I get the time...It's hard to have a steady relationship with this lifestyle you know..."
"Ah..." Toma empathized as he watched her.
"What about you? I know even though as a Johnny you have ways around..." Maki blushed again as she trailed off.
Toma chuckled. "Same boat as you...Back then things where easier to get away with, now too much precautions to take.
"Un," Maki answered before going quiet again. Soon the train reached their destination and they walked out into the streets of the prefecture.
"Well I should head off," Toma shook his hand with thumb up over his shoulder. "...You sure you don't need me to walk you to wherever?"
Maki shook her head with a smile. "Probably not the best time to be caught with the paparazzi with on our birthdays."
Toma laughed. "Yeah good point. Well see you later then. We should hang out sometime."
"Right. I'll let you know. Bye! Have fun!" Maki waved before turning her heel and headed the other way, that was when what she heard next almost made her wobble in her sandals.
"Bye! By the way you look great tonight."
Her head ducked, thanking God that she wasn't facing him anymore and continued to walk. 'Thank you...' she said mentally...

Toma was greeted at the club by his close guy friends and a few female friends. They started off with dancing in the public area to recruit some additional guests to join in their private party later in the reserved room. Of course as a Johnny and blessed with good looks, a decent amount of women wanted to entertain him tonight. Granted that they were a little bit older but they were within the usual age range Toma preferred with women. He was bound to have a good time...or so it may seem...After some time flirting and being fed snack bits from the women, his mind started to wander elsewhere. While the women where in the bathroom, Toma took the time to flip out his phone and texted a number he hasn't looked upon much for some years.

Maki was in luck when she arrived at the restaurant where her friends held their reservations in the back. The restaurant wasn't anything wild or noisy, in fact it was moderately classy but as Maki hoped, not too overdone. In the midst of eating and talking, her phone beeped in her purse.
"Sorry..." Maki apologized when her friends looked directly at her. She dug into her purse and flipped open her phone and smiled.
Her friends grinned wider as they started to whistle and makes "oo"-ing sounds.
"Whose is it?" Meisa tried to lurk over her shoulder, but stopped instantly when Maki moved her phone out of her view, taking the hint. She was grateful that her best friend started to distract the others back in a conversation as she turned back to her phone.
'Hey...it's Toma...in case you forgot...or deleted my number...wait who am I kidding? Sorry I'm talking nonsense =p kkk...anyway I hope you got to where you're supposed to be okay...'
'Yeah I got here fine. Thanks for asking :)'

A few streets away from her, Toma grinned at the simple reply. Suddenly it felt like he dove back into the past when him and the young starlet used to mail each other a lot. He looked up as he heard his female posse came back in.
'Just another message couldn't hurt right?'
~ ~ ~
Maki snapped the phone shut and started to get back to the swing of things until a few minutes later, her phone went off again.
'You're welcome...have fun!'
"...So whose that?" One of her friends probed after Maki set her phone down again for the second time.
"Oh nothing just one of my friends who I saw in the train who wanted to see if I got here okay." Maki prayed that she wasn't blushing on the outside as she said it.
"I see...Well enough chit chat and the conservative atmosphere! Let's go to a karaoke bar!"

The women were beginning to not focus so much on Toma (even though he was the birthday boy), not that he cared when they started to throw their arms over Yamapi and MatsuJun. On the other hand, he wouldn't let go of nor take his eyes off his phone for less than two or three seconds. He was lost his own world.

Just as they were getting settled in a room and were starting a few songs to warm up, Maki's phone went off.
'So... What are you up to?'
Maki fought back an audible laugh.
'We just started karaoke...how's your night? Danced with any pretty girls?'
'Mhmm a lot want to hang out with the birthday boy! Kkk'
'...if you don't mind me asking, if you're getting all the attention from everyone there, why are you texting me?'
'oh... Am I bothering you? I'm sorry you're right...I'll let you have your fun'
'no kkk I'm not annoyed, just wondering why do I win over your attention when you have plenty of girls vying for you?'
~ ~ ~
Toma blushed when he read that. 'Yeah why is that?' He thought obliviously even though his heart had been throbbing while they were mailing each other...

"You're spending a lot of time on on your phone tonight, aren't you?" Meisa eyed the preoccupied birthday girl as she was about to open the phone again after a text alert.
Maki's head shot up in surprise, also forgetting about her own company.
"Sorry." She apologized for the dozenth time tonight as she plopped her phone into her bag out of sight without reading Toma's text.
"Toma wanted to see how I was doing," she said before she can stop herself. Just the mention of the Johnny idol got everyone to forget the karaoke system and started to talk.
"Ikuta Toma?!"
"Oo! How is he?"
"Isn't he dating this girl-..."
"Wait! He's been texting you all this time?" Meisa arched an eyebrow curiously. Maki nodded hesitantly, resulting in hoots from her guy friends and excited squeals from her girl friends.
"Let's drink to that! To Maki-chan making a Johnny fall for her!" One of her friends raised his shot of sake as everyone giggled at the weird wording.
'But I don't think me and him are like that way...'
~ ~ ~
'I shouldn't of let them bribe me into drinking...' Maki scolded at herself as she made her way up her street to her house, seeing the main light in the living room on indicating her parents were still up. When she got closer she saw a thin figure standing at the doorway.
"Toma?!" She gasped in surprise when she got a better view of the Johnny standing before her. "What are you doing here? I thought you were clubbing with your friends."
The Johnny grinned with his dimples wrinkling his face. "I did and enjoyed but wanted to be able to share my birthday with yours...as corny as it sounds... But yeah..." He held up the bag he was holding that looked like a carton of ice cream, which made a smile grow on Maki's face.
They tucked in the living room after her parents got over their excitement of seeing Toma again, and decided to give them some space.
"Who knew they would have this kind of flavor!" Toma exclaimed as he scooped up some party cake ice cream for the both of them while Maki browsed through the family's collection of DVDs.
"My friends were wondering why you were texting me," Maki said shyly when the movie started.
"Why shouldn't we? We're friends right?" Toma took a big bite of ice cream, surprisingly immune to the brain freeze. Maki couldn't explain why she felt like a pebble thunk in her heart like it was a hollow container. Toma couldn't sort out why he was feeling this way now. 'We're just friends right?'
"Un..." She took her cup of ice cream and ate to cover up her own awkwardness, not noticing the looks she was getting from the male idol.
'It wouldn't hurt to see what will happen right?' He mustered up the courage to scoot over like a shy schoolboy that was hesitating to give chocolate to his crush on White Day.
Maki turned her head to only be enticed by the dreamy look Toma possessed before he enclosed in and softly pecked her lips softly. They stayed like that for sometime before Toma withdrew while he watched Maki's eyes flutter open before smiling.
"Happy birthday."
A small delicate hand raised up to brush the small brown hairs on Toma's nape. A soft hint of rose wisped over the apples of Maki's cheeks.
"Happy birthday."
That's when they knew...everything they've been dreaming of had been in front of them...their sweetest surprise.
A/N: So what did you guys think?! Told you it was corny and cheesy xD. But it was a pleasing experience for me since this is the first fic that I've written on my Itouch (still need to give it a name xD). Now I have something fun to do if I ever get bored at wherever I am, whether it be with or without wifi access! =D. Also I was writing this while waiting for Sho Bear (
cry1baby) to come back from watching TV. Sadly after she came back, I was more focused on the fic until I decided to turn in for the night xD Sorry Sho Bear!~
A/N 2: Yeah the story seems a lot like it's Maki's story but I tried to fix up the first draft from last night/ early morning. But believe me I tried TT-TT. And I'm sort of on a roll with my schoolwork, so there might be a ShoMaki fic that I will try to write up later tonight, also dedicated to Maki's birthday and still thinking of a Naruse x Naoto PWP for Toma (this one I can't make promises on TT-TT).
Anyway I hope you all enjoyed! Love some comments!!!
