The dangerous lemon shark is stocky and distinctively marked by a dark yellow back, a white belly, large dorsal and anal fins and a wide, flat head (Shark). The shark’s name comes from these markings; being yellow like a lemon (Enchanted). Lemon sharks are known to be aggressive towards humans and have slightly curved, triangular teeth (Enchanted). The teeth are located in rows which rotate into use as needed. The first two rows are used in obtaining prey, the other rows rotate into place as they are needed (Enchanted). As teeth are lost, broken, or worn down, they are replaced by new teeth that rotate into place. A young lemon shark loses an entire set of teeth, one at a time, every 7-8 days (Enchanted). The average size of a lemon shark is 8 to 10 feet long, but the longest recorded lemon shark was 12 feet long (Enchanted).
A lemon sharks’ breeding rituals haven’t been very well studied, but what we do know is that the females, like salmon and other marine species, return to their natal grounds later in life to breed. The males however, remain nomadic throughout their life (National). The sharks’ recorded litter size is between 4 and 17 baby sharks and the gestation period lasts 10 to 12 months (Elasmodiver).
The sharp teeth of a lemon shark are designed to catch slippery fish, which is mostly what a lemon sharks’ diet consists of (Enchanted). They also eat bony fish, guitar fish, mollusks, crustaceans, rays, and other sharks (Shark). Lemon sharks feed at night and live in tropical, temperate water (Shark). These sharks can withstand low oxygenation, so they also live near the surface or in shallow waters or river mouths (Shark).
