HOla mis amigos!
i{m in nicaragua. it{s my 2 day here...after a boat ride from belize to honduras..and 6 or 7 buses through honduras to nicaragua...we finally got to our spanish school destination! yahoo!
grrr....give me patience though...because this stinkin computer is not allowing me to write in my yahoo email! not to mention i don{t know the correct combination of buttons to press inorder to get the ^at^ sign! which explains all the funky marks on my message. argh!! patience.
anyway...yes, i{m in Esteli, Nicaragua for spanish school with 4 other peace corp volunteers for 2 weeks. i almost didn{t get to go because my passport needed to be approved by the belizean immigration (for my 1 yr visa in belize) before i could go. Thank goodness...Belize immigration returned it in time for me to go.
[anyway...for my parents...i{m here safe and sound.]
Just a little bit about Esteli, Nicaragua...it used to be one of the main cities where the Sandanistas and the Contras warred! pretty crazy. I remember hearing about the war back in the 80s. Well, just today we learned a little about the history and culture of nicaragua. We met some artists-muralists at the ¨house of culture¨ ...and they showed us this one mural of rockets painted with the US flag on them...flying towards the flags of third world countries (i.e. nicaragua, iraq, vietnam, etc). Chains and arms with veins and tension between the people of the flags and the robot, which i take as the US. It was an awesome mural....however a little disturbing and very eye opening. The artist said that this is the reality here in NIcaragua. The US, with it{s superpower and technology war against the poorer countries. Actually..maybe it{s the poorer countries reality of constant war..and the US...seem to back the wars (i.e. the Sandanista and Contra wars). Insane. I actually felt for the artist. The artist and our teacher asked what the percentage of Americans know of how life is in other countries (such as nicaragua)..and we told them that not many people in the states know how there is so much war in other countries. hopefully, the artist can understand from our point of view too. That we are not to blame exactly...but maybe the powers of our government! It seemed like he was transmiting some blame to us because we are from the states becuase of this, I slightly felt uncomfortable It{s a different world down here...i{m realizing..that much of the world is different from what we know in the states.
well, i hope i can find another computer so that i can write more. ihop you are all doing well.. drop me a note or something. talk to you all soon,
love, cherry
